    The X-files: Resist or Serve

There was a time when I thought the xfiles was one of the best shows ever, but I stopped watching it after the 7th season because it started to bore the crap out of me. Even before the game came out, when I would be reading magazines, I would just skip the game's previews because the thought never occurred to me that I would be interested in it. But one of the reasons the game has caught my eye now was because I noticed it was developed by BlackOps. The ones who made Treasures of the Deep(ps1) and Knockout Kings 2001(ps2). Both very good games, especially TotD. Another reason was the price, 30 bucks.

After 2 days with the game, I’m happy to say that I’m pleasantly surprised. It is like a Resident Evil-Silent Hill hybrid. The story coupled with the acting, decent graphics, and the excellent music and sound effects, provide a very spooky atmosphere. Minute realistic and show specific details also really add to the game's appeal. Like the crossed hand flashlight and handgun stance that the characters always used in the show, the save system where you save by finding scotch-taped X's throughout the game, the sloppy mulder notes compared to scully's clean organized ones, the likeliness of the characters, they even captured the way scully runs perfectly. There’s alot of other cool little things like the way you can peer into adjacent rooms through glass windows with the flashlight.

There are 3 episodes in all with the first one starting off in a quiet little town of RedFalls where there are complaints of witchcraft. The game is setup where you pick who you want to play (mulder or scully) like in resident evil 2 where each character has different paths and different quests. You do eventually meet up from time to time and the chemistry between the two is great, just as it was in the show with mulder sometimes displaying his dry wit and scully trying to brush it off. When you are together, you control when to arm and when to holster the handguns of both characters. For example, if you're mulder and you pull out your gun, scully will do the same. It’s a neat little effect as it shows how cooperative they are.

My complaints about the game: the camera is nonadjustable. You do get used to it though as it pans in and out in some areas like in resident evil code veronica. And the cut scenes needed more polish. Sometimes you sit there wondering, "WTH, did I miss a cut scene or something"? You do eventually put together the things you don’t understand when you re-view those cut scenes though.

The game is a great pick up for the price. I might have even paid 50 for it because now I find myself checking the local listing to see when the show's old episodes come on TV. So I think its safe to say that the game has revitalized my interest in the search for the truth.

If you do get the game, I suggest you play with the sound way up and the lights out. There are moments of fright, but not as much as say...Fatal Frame. The game does have its moments though and it also has its fair shair of gore, but the main driving force behind this survival horror game is its eerie affect.

Thanks for the impressions. I wasn't expecting much from this game, but I am an X-Files freak so I'll probably pick it up. Sounds good.
