Anyone remember Battletoads for NES? That game was the bane of my existence as a kid. Horrendously hard. Also, to the poster above, Super Ghouls and Ghosts in generally considered the hardest videogame ever. It came out for the Gameboy advance not too long ago. I remember that being hard as well, but not as hard for me as Battletoads.

good point. some of the NES/SNES generation games were ridiculous. no save points(at least for NES) made it hard enough, but some had a finite number of continues which made it insane. The Ninja Turtles game on NES comes to mind. sometimes they weren't really as hard as it seemed, but you needed to sit down for hours to get through it in one sitting. there was one game that is widely accepted as the hardest ever(at least popular game), it was for NES or SNES, i don't exactly remember what it was, but it had to do with zombies and stuff, maybe a castlevainia, ninja gaiden, ghoul's and ghost's or something.
as for out of the box next generation games, i haven't played one harder than Ninja Gaiden. at least not on standard difficultly level(see the other thread on beating halo on the hardest setting!). the closest i can think of is resident evil for playstation. took me forever to beat that game, the rationing of the saves made it tough(that and the game is just plain hard even if you could save at anytime). i'm sure i am forgetting a game or something, but i don't remember playing a recent game harder than Ninja Gaiden.

I feel the same way about ninja gaiden, it feels just as hard as the old NES games. Something that can frustrate most, but if you push through it like you did back then, you can finish it, and get good enough to make it almost automatic.
ghost and goblins. I spent more time on that one game than any other game i can remember. It was also one of the first 2 games i got with my NES(THE OTHER BEING smb). I was so happy when i finally finished the game, only to find out the first time thru you reallly didnt finish it. It was a clone satan or whatever; you had to go thru the whole game again.
battletoads was mad hard too.

A couple more do exist though, they are just spread out between each console. On GC, Viewtiful Joe, SMS(it's kinda cheap) and Ikaruga will tear you to shreads if you aren't glued to the screen. PS2...I think Bacardi already mentioned it but contra: shattered soilder is a tough SOB...shinobi and maximo are tough ones too. Xbox has pretty hard ones too like Panzar Dragoon and PGR1(that game is MEAN).

Re: Is Ninja Gaiden the most difficult game ever?...
I actually beat Ghouls and Ghosts and Battletoads. Hardest games I've ever played were Contra without the code, Friday the 13th, and Jaws! Everytime you'd get close to killing the thing it'd run away and gain more power.Comment

The toughest game I have played since the 8 and 16 bit days is Ikaruga for Gamecube (also on Dreamcast in Japan). It is a classic top down scrolling shooter that is insanely hard, but quite rewarding.Comment
