    Onimusha series.
    Kessen series.
    Samurai Shodown series.
    Bushido Blade series.
    Tenchu series.

Shenmue and Shenmue II are great; the samurai code of honor is the only real trace of what you're looking for, but the game itself is awesome.

<font color="teal">After extensive review, I have narrowed my choices to

      Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven

      AND

      Samurai Warriors

      Hmmmm... Decisions, decisions...
I'm prolly gonna go with Tenchu because of the price, but I dunno.

<font color="white"> Samurai Warriors is pure testosterone-injected arcarde action; not much thinking involved. Basically, you use your selected character(there are a ton) to mow down hundreds of enemy troops.

Tenchu, on the otherhand, requires thinking and hand control. It's pretty violent, but high on style and substance.

The game closest to the movie The Last Samurai is definitely Way of the Samurai. Actually, it takes place during the same period (Meji - I think), and you fight in the same rebellion as Tom Cruise's character in the film. A useful tidbit: it was created using the base Tenchu engine.

All games I listed -- exclude Kessen I -- contain some cartoonish elements varying from too-hot-chick syndrome to over-the-top enemies/bosses.

If realism is what you're after, consider these:
            Kengo: Master of Bushido (Ps2)
Shogun: Total War (Excellent RTS/TB hybrid; as real as games get)

If you're leaning toward Tenchu: WoH. I recommend a rental first, as the gameplay is tricky, and might turn you off. Hope this helps.

way of the samurai is one of the best gave i have ever played.. only downfall is the length. but it makes up for it with how many different ways you can play. basically, the entire thing is free and you can join different sides as you play. it is pretty sweet. i like the sword collecting part of it as well.
