The future of video games and online

I was watching one of those video game shows today (Judgement Day) and I notice the strong emphasis on online gaming in terms of being a need for games. That got me to thinking about the future of video games when it comes to online capability.

I don't think it's too farfetched to see a world where every video game will be online compatible. I could easily see a future where sports games will have amazing AI but will be best played against people and every action/adventure game being in the mold of GTA in terms of free roaming ability while being online.

What do you people think about this? Do you think the days of playing games by yourself are coming to an end and everyone is going to HAVE to have online in order to really enjoy their games?

Not necessarily having to be online to enjoy their games. Online just enhances the experience. Hard to explain really if you've never done it, but it just adds to the vibe of the game having to compete with/against another person rather than the CPU. It's pretty cool if you know them too.

I think online is going to continue to grow, but the fact is right now not even 10% of gamers play online. It is a selling point for hardcore gamers, but for most it isn't. BTW, I don't take anything on Judgement Day seriously.

Yeah it's true that only a small minority play online but it's a very vocal minority IMO. BTW I also don't take them too seriously but they're funny

Yeah, it can be funny, but I think Tommy's reviews are horrible. I think Super Smash Bros. Melee is one of the most fun multiplayer experiences of all time and is ranked very high according to Game Stats but he gave it like a 2.5!!! haha

As far as TV reviews go, X-Play is much better, but JD is entertaining sometimes.

Online play has become a major selling point even though few in comparison to own the consoles use it.

I think online play will continue to grow, but game developers will never abandon single player games. Single player games are the media through which game developers tell their stories. Sure, you can create stories in multiplayer games, but they'll never be as rich and deep as the single player stories. Case and point, single player gives developers the freedom to tell a story to the gaming audience. Without that medium, games would lose their artistic quality.
