Well it depends on the law I think cause in Florida these companies seem to follow the pawnbroker laws very seriously so it's never been a thing where I can just bring business elsewhere

One thing is the police having access to this whenever they want, without a warrant or probable cause. They run a search on a print and now know who you are without having to do any of the normal police work. You may or may not be guilty, but plenty of innocent people go to jail.

The other thing is them storing the data. In the future your print could be used to do lots of things, no reason for Gamestop to store it. Are they storing it securely? Plenty of places have security breaches, so no reason to put potential data out there about you.

I don't care if it's time consuming or not. You already have to show them your ID to trade something in, that should be enough. I shouldn't have to give a fingerprint to trade in a video game. What's next, blood samples?

I've run into that down here in South Florida as well. I usually trade in games via Amazon if at all, as Gamestop prices are usually horrible.

Re: Philly Gamestop Now Requiring Fingerprints

There are certainly better ways to handle it, but this is clearly a reaction to prevent people from selling stolen goods back to Gamestop. Corporate cover my *** move.

I don't like it, but it's the most convenient way to get rid of a game. Either that or Best Buy.

Re: Philly Gamestop Now Requiring Fingerprints

The GameStops I go to in Louisville have been doing this for a while now. It has something to do with them being classified as pawn shops and receiving stolen merch and what not. At first I was more then a little PO'd but whatever. I have to do it at Best Buy too now so it doesn't bug me too much, it's not like my prints aren't on file somewhere long before this.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

You really think checking an ID is the same as keeping your fingerprints on file? LOL.

Serious question: I'm assuming that your prints are in the system because of job or loan application. You are comfortable with giving a Gamestop employee access to your fingerprints?

Would you be comfortable giving a Gamestop employee access to your SSN in order to trade in a game? Thats already in the system too.

I havent shopped at Gamestop in 2 years because their trade in prices are low compared to the competition and Amazon is way more convenient. I already go somewhere else. Doesnt mean that people cant comment on what is a huge invasion of privacy in order to trade in a game.

I fail to see the issue as it is not forced on anybody. If GS asks me for my fingerprints I'll just go somewhere else.

That private business line has always been BS and is still BS. The "you can always go somewhere else" line was also used in the Jim Crow south when private businesses refused to serve minorities too. It wasnt valid then and isnt valid now. Just because a business can do something doesnt mean they should.
