Thanks for the reply. He's willing to take a chance and keep it. I guess I just read too many posts about how much of a problem the Thompson Drives are.

I should be picking up my XBOX in a couple of days, and I guess I need a little reassurance.

I've had a Thompson drive in my xbox for over a year and I've never had any problems. However, if I was buying a new xbox and I received another Thompson drive I would immediately take it back and try to get the Samsung drive.

I'd had mine since February of 2002 and the only problem I get is dirty disk errors and Rallisport 2 takes like 10 tries to get started.

I bought an Xbox a few months back that came with a Thomson drive and I returned it immediately. The next one I got was a Phillips, so I kept it.

My advice to your friend: Tell him to get if from Best Buy and get their warranty. It's only $20 (compared to $50 MS would charge). It's good for two years and if something goes wrong with your Xbox they will give you a new one. The reason I say this is because you can go to the forums at Xbox.com and people will tell you how MS likes to charge shipping if they repair your box... even if you have a warranty.

Microsoft's warranty and service on the XBOX are pretty bad. I got one in the third month that they were out. Like a lot of people I started getting damaged disk errors about 18 months after I got it. It was going to cost me over $100 to have it fixed. I was going to try to fix it myself until I heard EB would give me $99 store credit for it. I could use the store credit and buy a new XBOX for cheaper than I could get the other one fixed. The warranty I got on the new box from EB was better and cheaper than what you get from Microsoft.
