    My PS2 is broken..i think

It will not play new games. It plays games like the first Socom but Madden04 and NCAA Football 2004 freeze up. The system is old. Any suggestions?

If you're comfortable taking the unit apart, since it's old and the warranty is surely gone, you could clean it up inside manually. There are several FAQs online about how to do it. Just google search for PS2 Cleaning FAQ. Here is one I found with a quick search. I think Gamespot or maybe even IGN may have one too, I don't know.

Second option, if the case has never been opened, is to send it to Sony and for about 80 bucks they'll replace the laser.

Third option I suppose would be to buy a new PS2.

JohnDoe is correct. My PS2 started doing the same thing last year. It would load action and platform type games but, mot EA Sports titles. It would load ESPN Football, but would lock up on the load playbook screen.

What has happened is the DVD laser is dropping voltage. If cleaning it doesn't work you might attempt to adjust the voltage across the laser. If that fails a new laser can be bought online for about $60. Its not hard to change them out.

My ps2 is about 3 years old now. And all of a sudden, after playing Hitman 3 last month, it just takes forever to read the CD when you first put it in the tray. Id say it takes about a minute or 2, instead of the usual 5 seconds. Also, when I put in a blue back CD, it doesnt even read that one. Anyone know if there is a way to clean this up?

I was having the same problems, took it apart and cleaned it thoroughly, works like a champ now. In that FAQ I linked in my first reply, it also has a section about adjusting laser voltage. I believe I tweaked mine ever so slightly so it would read CDs again without any trouble, but you have got to be careful and mark the original spot with a felt tip pen or something, so if you get way off track you can return it back to the original spot where it was and try again.
