Question on buying a new XBOX

Need some help with my XBOX. I have a launch XBOX with the Thompson drive and am getting a lot of DDEs even with playing newer games like NCAA 2005. I tried cleaning the lens and all but to no avail. I still get a lot of DDEs...with some games to the point that I can't get them to play. So I thought about getting a new XBOX. My question is:

    1. Is there a way to tell from looking at the serial numbers on the outside of the box which DVD drive it has? I know that you can tell right away by looking at the DVD tray what drive you have. But obviously this would mean that I need to actually buy and open the box. I guess my main concern is that I do not want to buy another XBOX with a Thompson drive.

2.How much in trade in value could I get for my XBOX at say Gamestop?

Hope someone can help me here. Very frustrating not being able to play games or even worse, you are playing a game and all of a sudden that dreaded DDE screen appears . Thanks in advance for any help.

I was in the same boat as you. Instead of buying a new Xbox, just buy a new DVD drive. You can find them on Ebay for $60-$80. I recommend a Samsung because they can play anything, but a Philips is a helluva lot better than a Thompson. Much cheaper than a new Xbox and all you have to do is open yours up, and switch the power cable and the IDE cable. Super super easy. Let me know if you need more info

Can someone out there answer this original question?

Is there an indicator on the OUTSIDE of the Xbox packaging that would indicate the drive type?

I am trading mine in today and I want to know what to look for without having to open it, plug it in and then eject the disk tray just so I can say, 'Nope. This has the drive I don't want.'

I don't care if I get $5 for mine. I am so sick of those Damaged or Dirty errors I could scream! I have had NFL2k5 in my hands for 3 DAYS NOW and have not been able to play it! ARRRRRGGGG!!!!

I believe that Gamestop is taking trade-ins on the XBox for $80... best thing to do is call them.

What I've noticed having 2 Xboxes, a Thompson and a Samsung... is that the DDE's only happen for me on EA Sports games.

I don't have a problem with anyone else. It's bothersome knowing it's just EA Sports.

BUT, if you play a lot of EA games and have the money to get a new system after trade-in, go for it. =)
