    Star Ocean 5

    Gematsu

Star Ocean 5 is in development for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, the latest issue of Famitsu reveals.

A release date is still unannounced, but the game is developed by tri-Ace and published by Square Enix.
    More:

It is set on the uncivilized planet of Feycreed, which is 6,000 light years away from Earth.

    Currently revealed characters include:
    • Fedel Camus (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa) – The protagonist. He specializes at fencing, and protects the order of his village.
    • Miki Sorvesta (voiced by Nao Toyama) – The heroine. She is the protagonist’s childhood friend, and loves him like an older brother.
    • Lilia (voice actor unknown) – A girl who lost both her memories and emotions.

The magazine also has screenshots of a blonde swordsman and blue-haired witch participating in battle.

Battles are seamless and in real-time. Depending on the distance between you and the enemy, the way you attack changes, and pushing buttons consecutively will trigger combos.

In addition to traditional event scenes, there will also be “seamless events” such as those where enemies attack you. If the enemy apprehends your allies during these events, there will be branching outcomes.

Star Ocean for the ps1 was one of my favorite Jrpg's. I hope this isn't like the last two.

        Yep, saw this yesterday. Psyched.

Guessing we're looking at 2016 (at least) for a localization of this one.

Now Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness, 2016 for NA and EU.

STAR OCEAN, the epic, sci-fi RPG saga that takes players to the stars and beyond, makes its triumphant return with its forthcoming fifth installment in the series. The title is developed by tri-Ace, the celebrated studio behind each of the previous iterations, with character designs by akiman (Akira Yasuda).

At this point in history, between the second and third games in the series, the Pangalactic Federation is nearing the fulfilment of its mission: Peace and order throughout the galaxy. However, the embers of conflict begin to stir once more on the planet of Faykreed, 6,000 light years from Earth, as a new story begins in the ocean of stars.

Never dreamed that this might be out before Kingdom Hearts 3, but seeing as we at least have a release year for this one....

Kinda funny to see an entire 6 - character party running around town after being so used to seeing 3 at the most in the field.

Love the seamless transition from field to battle.

People might say the game looks MMO'ish in battle, but to me it still looks like a very familiar battle system with a much more dynamic camera. SO's always been about the freedom to move around the battle area.

6 character battles could be either incredible or disastrous depending on how well done the AI is. Hard to imagine adjusting that many different AI's on the fly if they're not doing their jobs.

            Really excited for this one.

Star Ocean 5 producer on the lessons Tri-Ace has learned from Star Ocean 4’s foibles

Square Enix is working with longtime series developer Tri-Ace on Star Ocean 5, with a release coming to Japan this winter, and to North America in 2016. The long-running role-playing series faltered with the release of Star Ocean 4, but the developers want to assure fans that they’re back on-track with the upcoming PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 release, calling it an evolution of an “old-school RPG.” But the company is also looking to move the franchise forward with some new ideas and philosophies on how studios present role-playing games.

                Re: Star Ocean 5

Shuichi: Let me correct you. Maybe the scene you looked at had six characters, but in actual gameplay there will be more than six. In more traditional RPGs, as the story unfolds, you get more and more people joining the party. Sometimes, at some point, if you have more than four or six, you have to choose who to form the party with. In this game we don’t have that. We’re going to make all party members featured and physical in the field. They can engage in battle.
                Wow.

Also new to me that it takes place between 2 and 3 in the timeline. At least they don't have to add on to the cluster**** that was 3's climax.

Archived "Star Log" stream which is the first large info dump on the English game (if you haven't been following the trickle of JPN info the last few weeks leading up to release at the end of this month):

Narrowed western release window to Summer 2016, and confirmed dual-audio support. It's crazy how this has jumped ahead of KH3 and FFXV on release schedule considering I didn't even know of the existence of this game until LONG after the other two.

Western release date: June 28. Faster turnaround than I expected.

Game released yesterday in Japan. I saw a few people streaming it on Twitch (though I'm not watching)

70 minutes of English version gameplay:

Don't think I'm going to watch the whole thing as I'd rather go into it not knowing anything. Might sneak a peek at some of the battle footage, though.

My collector's edition (the first of those I've gotten since FFXII) shipped out this morning. I'll be playing tomorrow night after work.

I'm going to try not to blast right through it - I've heard it's a bit on the short side as RPG's go.

Download/Install size is going to be around 25-26 GB, I think.
