I just finished the demo about 30 mins ago and, although I could save 12 bucks by getting it through my GCU membership, I couldn’t wait until tomorrow to keep playing. OMG the demo was amazing!

This has been sitting on my shelf since I bought it, I played the initial sequence, and it really didn't hook me all that much.. How does it go from there? Is it typically better or is that the status quo for the game? Just have a lot coming out in the coming months and I've been resisting the urge to sell it due to hearing great things, but have had little motivation to dive in.

Finally got back to this last week after falling off from it earlier in the year. I got pretty much all the endings and did 90% of the quests. I enjoyed it, but like the first Nier, you have to have some tolerance for monotony to see it all.

For me the payoff wasn't as great as the first game. The story, characters, locations, bosses, and even music and the way new game+ endings were handled, while good here, were better in the first Nier.

OMG The feels from Ending E...

BTW you're welcome if you ever saw "Teefmummy" on Ending E.

BTW I want all the Yoko Taro games going forward, though i expect him to never have YorHA in his games again, or he kills them in the worst way.

Just beat the game. I liked it but I’m not the biggest fan of the whole multiple play through thing. It made the game feel much longer and more of a grind.

Man I am so torn on this game... or more precisely, on getting this game.

I have downloaded the demo couple of weeks ago out of pure curiosity, and while I was initially not overly impressed by gameplay and mechanics and whatnot, I somehow still cannot get the game out of my head.

It certainly has unique (aka weird, kind of) graphics, and the music in the demo was excellent. From what I learned from this thread, it might have an interesting story, and perhaps even some emotional ending(s). All of that are plus points, no doubt.

But what draws me most to the game is certainly the character from the demo, 2B. She looks so damn freaking amazing that I strongly consider getting the game just because of her alone, however sad it may sound.

Unfortunately, there were also hints or two in this thread that you get to play as other character(s) at some point in the game - can anyone please confirm / explain this? I mean, do you HAVE to play as another character during the game, or you can CHOOSE to do (or not do) so?

Because I sure as hell would not want to play as anybody other than 2B.

The game is meant to be played through at least 3 times to get the true ending if I remember correctly. The second playthrough is with 9S which is the male that's with you in the demo.

Not sure what console you're going to play on but if you have an Xbox One, it's in Game Pass just so you know.

The soundtrack alone makes this game worth it.

                      Re: Nier: Automata (PS4/PC)

Finally dipped into this game and it trully has some serious boom-or-bust potential. Kind of like a polarizing draft prospect, with a mediocre (but not low) floor but a really, really high ceiling. So far it still makes me want to come back for more which obviously is a good thing.

I have no idea how far I progressed in the game, still in my first playthrough with the 2B character. Almost every aspect is kind of up and down so far:

                      - graphics is at its best in towns and locations where vegetation is prevalent, while the desert locations are a bit more grim / hollow

                      - music so far has been best in the opening part (the one from the demo), as well as in the Amusement Park (which is awesome from start to finish), but there are also locations where it's only so-so (interestingly, each location has its own music sequence, no matter when or how often you get in and out of said location)

                      - side quests look interesting enough to keep me searching for more, at least while playing as 2B (the fact that they can provide some serious rewards does not hurt, either)

                      - the best part so far are cut scenes / cinematics, where both graphics and the story really shine

So far it seems this will either be a pure gem or a one-playthrough-and-done kind of thing. Whichever it will be, it sure is going to be worth the money, considering I got the game from PS Store on a Christmas Deal for under €20.

Oh, and 2B is hot as hell, but I already knew that.

Once you unlock them, the transport stations are a game-changer in this game. It's so much more fun when you can suddenly fast-travel all over the map and don't need to trot through the same segments over and over again.

Also, there is at least one more location which plays the same theme as in the factory (starting location). I was stoked. Of course, there had to be a downside - both the factory and this new location are the only ones I've been to so far that don't play their theme again once you leave them and then come back later. Huge disappointment.

The relatively abrupt ending of the first playthrough (Ending A) caught me really off guard. It came after roughly 22 hours of gameplay, and initially left me a bit saddened, confused and disappointed, because from watching the original game trailers I expected much more than what was revealed during that playthrough.

The ending itself (the cinematics, not the boss fight), however, was very nice, surprisingly intimate and anti-climactic (in a good way).

                          Spoiler

The second playthrough, with 9S as the lead character, is not nearly as tedious as I feared it to be. I immediately realized two important things: you still get to play alongside 2B most of the time, and some key aspects of gameplay are so markedly different that there is almost no chance the game will get boring as you advance deeper into the story.

Don't want to turn this into another LPGA Tour thread but I feel like this game definitely deserves one last summary before I move on... or not.

Having reached Endings A, B and G at the beginning of the year, I have now returned to Nier after nine months to get remaining "main" endings, and promptly got one of the "surprise" endings (P), losing all my 2.5 hours worth of progress in the process because I did not make a single save.

On one hand I was pissed off because I hate wasting time (even when playing gems such as this), on the other it allowed me to actually get back into the story and lore and all that, because at first it felt definitely weird being back after such a long time.

So one day later I again loaded up from the previous B ending and went through what turned out to be probably the best playthrough of them all. The twists and turns of the story, the surprises and revelations... All the sadness, betrayal, rage, hate, compassion, sacrifice... At the end of the playthrough, I went with my guts (and heart) and made a choice...

                            Spoiler

...which led me to Ending C.

The playthrough did nothing but confirm the game's firm standing in my personal Top 3 of all time, and I was dying to continue through at least another two playthroughs to get endings D and E.

However, it turns out that no more playthroughs are available, and all you have to do to get the other two main endings is to make some alternate choices during the final boss battle.

Also, after that third playthrough all chapters of the game are unlocked for immediate play, also showing you how your progress went as you progressed through your game. I was shocked to learn I actually completed (quests) or unlocked (items, weapons) less then half of the game's content, including vital lore / story information.

At first, I felt like the game failed to lead me to many of the quests and to many of the hidden but vital lore items / documents, but I was also mad at myself to not really give myself enough time, moving through the game a little too quickly at times.

After a day or two of feeling quite miserable, I have returned to get Endings D and E, while also browsing a little bit of internet for bits of information I missed in my own game. This allowed me to get comfortable with how I played the game all that time and where it have lead me to (I consider Ending C to be my official ending, with the total play time just north of 48 hours).

I am also pretty certain that I will do a NG+ somewhere in the future, to not only reward myself with pleasure of playing this masterpiece of a game again, but also to find as much stuff I missed first time as possible. I am hell bent on one day getting the prequel, Nier Replicant, and finishing Replicant might feel like a right time to do the NG+ run of Automata.

                            Can't wait.

                            FREAKING. AMAZING. GAME.

Currently playing Replicant. It's good but nowhere near Automata in my opinion. Of course, it is a remaster of a 2010 PS3/360 game so it makes sense that Automata is better.
