    The Tomorrow Children (PS4)

One of my anticipated 2015 games that's currently set for a fall release, here's a good preview of what kind of a game it is. It's off the wall storyline and gameplay has me intrigued. I'm not sure what to make of it but I love that it's different.

The game services an intriguing back-story, set around the backlash of a huge experiment that takes place in 1960s Soviet Russia. The experiment goes horribly wrong, nearly obliterating the entire world, leaving in its wake a white void. It is in the void that you must help your people start again, rebuilding the lives they once lost, meanwhile fighting back the monsters that derive from the nightmares of those who are lost.

In order to rebuild, you take charge of a clone, built by the scientists who destroyed the world in the first instance. With this clone, you must set out to discover the remaining pieces of human DNA, safely locked away in Matryoshka dolls, and bring it back to the scientists who use them to restore its human form again.

This is certainly a bespoke story, and something we have never seen before. However, it isn't just the story that is so different from the norm.

The Tomorrow Children is an online game that combines synchronous and asynchronous gameplay. What this means is that some parts of the game will be isolated form others, such as exploring, while other parts of the game will have a direct effect and be visible to others. So if you dig a hole in your world, players in other worlds will see you digging that hole, and that hole will remain in their world too. It is hoped that this type of interactivity will encourage teamwork and a game experience that is elevated by working with others.

As part of this interesting online experience, players in the Tomorrow children will be free to do as they please in this Sandbox game. However, if they choose, players can adopt a specific role and specialize in certain activities. If you are unsure of what role you would like to occupy, the game can decide for you, selecting a role that is in demand by the world you currently occupy, thus encouraging a diverse workforce.

Sharing resource and information with other players will be vital in building a lucrative community.

In The Tomorrow Children, your goal is to help rebuild humanity, and this is done primarily through the gathering of resources. Resources are used to build your town, power the machines within, create items and ultimately bring to life the departed humans. As your town grows and you gather more resources, more people will be brought to life, who will then populate the growing town.

Resources are mined, and can be found in various locations. Your primary target for finding resources will be the bespoke landscapes that surround your town across the void. These landscapes are made from the dreams of the people who were engulfed in the failed experiment, and take many different forms. As a clone, you must traverse the void to these locations and begin to dig away the mine-able parts to reveal the resources trapped within.

Resources can also be gathered by killing the numerous monsters that attack your town in waves, turning into mine-able materials upon their demise.

As your town grows through your good deeds, you will be rewarded with ration coupons, of which you can trade for newer and better items. However, just as you are rewarded for good deeds, you will also be punished for acting in an undesired fashion. If you are naughty enough, you will be apprehended by the police.

The concept and features adopted by The Tomorrow Children are accentuated by the game's interesting visual style. Based on Czech Republic cartoons from the 1960s, with a splash of ultra modern tech, all complemented with a fantastic lighting system make up an impressive look. Textures almost look real, with the closest comparison I can fathom being a set of real life objects sitting upon a brilliant white kitchen counter.

      Re: The Tomorrow Children (PS4)

Well, I just completed about 2 hours of beta play for The Tomorrow Children. First thing I need to say is this. It's probably the most strangest game I've ever encountered or played. The beta is roughly only 4 hours a day. Yesterday, today and tomorrow are the only 3 days.

There were moments I didn't know what was going on. As soon as your playing, your introduced to this dictator who speaks Russian (English caption below) to you from a monitor above and explains how some experiment has gone awry and it is your duty to help rebuild. You are told you are one of many clones. In the meantime, I'm given a pick and told to gather resources and go dig, gain points, citizenship, and then residency in a town.

Once I've picked up some minerals and dropped it off, I was instructed to go to see the Minister of Labor for further instructions. Problem was, I had no idea where it was however, up in the distance, I see an underground subway system. From a radio carrier that was given to me by the dictator, I was told to go towards the subway....And yes, I'm riding in the subway to a city where I encounter other players who look identical, but wearing different style clothing. I was told to find wood immediately for the town, and in my haste, didn't settle down in residency in this town. From the start, you're given a deed or permit for residency. Once you find a nice location, you claim a house, apartment, or condo. Once the residency fills up, you have to go to the subway to a different town and look to settle in.

In one town I came to, it was attacked by these robotic spiders. Some players who build up credits and points and take on a job as a military or police member are charged with protecting the town by firing heavy guns. There's also a bus that comes at the town's stop to pick you up or drop you off at different locations. There was no map so I'm not sure if it's because its beta and that not all pieces are in the game. You can't go and
roam the land or venture away from a town on foot. You find yourself sinking into the abyss, somewhat like quicksand.

I noticed that in some towns you can have your friends reside all together and even vote on a town mayor to help protect and build your town. As daylight was turning into night, I wanted to find residency immediately and went town to town looking to house myself for the night. I did accidentally find the Minister of Labor and gather some valuable points. However, while riding the subway, the servers seemed to crash and I kept trying to get back but was unsuccessful.

In the end, it's a strange game but I wanted to learn more of it. I believe there's a story in all this. I'm going to try again tomorrow and see if I can find residency and discover other parts of the game. I'm not sure if its going to be something that I'm going to want to invest time into. The game is essential to player cooperation and teamwork. If you have a job, the town needs you. You don't show up for work, the mayor or some other authoritarian person may want you thrown out, jailed, or some other horrible means. LOL

Here are some screen shots taken from the game.

Yes, most likely only digital too.

For it to be successful, it's going to need many players jumping in at the start. Since it's developed by Japan Studios and published by SCE, I wouldn't be surprised that this game becomes a PS+ free monthly give away when released.

That kind of disappoints me if there is no ability to play single player.

Well actually there is in some strange way. I also noticed this in my beta playing.

                      Re: The Tomorrow Children (PS4)

Q-Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment have announced that The Tomorrow Children will be launching next month on September 6 with the early access Founders Pack and in the coming months, a F2P version. The Founders Pack is priced at $19.99 and the contents can be found here.

This game was once on my Want List and I participated in the Alpha (January) and Beta (June). I will say this, the game was the strangest game I've ever played. It requires group cooperation and has a Soviet Union post-apocalyptic theme to it. It only lasted 3 days but I definitely wanted to learn more about this crazy game.

Not sure if I'll be jumping in again this time (still debating it) with so many other games coming out but one of the perks of jumping into the Sept 6 launch with the Founders Pack is getting the Bourgeoisie papers. You get the ability to start building your house and receive five invitations to send to your friends, granting them access to the F2P game before full public release.
