Def Jam: How do you counter?

In Def Jam Fight 4 NY, I have countered attacks a few times, but I am not sure how.

Do you know if there is a specific counter button, or does the "correct" counter button depend on what attack your opponent is performing?

I'm playing on XBox, though I assume the controls are similiar on all consoles.

Just found out via in game "tip."

To counter you hit block and the directional pad/stick towards your opponent. If the timing is right, you will counter.

You can also counter grapples by making quick punches/kicks. I was always being knocked down-pickedup-grappled-repeat.
