Just got to the end of FC myself after putting in well over 40+ hours. I hear SC is double around 70-90 hrs. Will be $29.99 on PC and PSP on Oct 29th. If you are a fan of games like FFVII, you will love this series as I am hooked.

Re: Trails in the Sky: SC
Friendly suggestion to anyone who wants to try this game, whether they played FC or not - I would strongly advise not making your first playthrough anything above Normal difficulty. This game is unique among most sequels in that it carries over your main character's level from the previous game, up to Lv. 40 max (or starts you at Lv 35 otherwise). I played the first few hours on Hard with my Lv. 34 save file, and even the first area was an extremely frustrating experience. You're very limited in what equipment you can buy at that point, and there is really no way through it other than to grind. Even that would've been okay if the XP you earned didn't scale to your level - in other words, you can't just endlessly grind an area because you'll earn less and less XP as your level increases. It's just not balanced for Hard and above, and maybe it's not supposed to be for a first playthrough. There is a retry offset option that lowers the difficulty every time you die and retry a battle, but going through the entire game like that seems counter-productive.
Anyway, the narrative had me drawn in right from the first scene as it picks up the day after FC concludes. As such you may find yourself incredibly lost if you didn't play FC - this is definitely meant to be played as a continuous series.
Gonna be playing this for a while - it's been a long wait.Comment

I'm glad you posted this. It looks interesting but wondered if I needed to play the first one beforehand. You answered my question lolComment

Re: Trails in the Sky: SC
This is easily the best JRPG I've played since Persona 4 Golden. Might end up being one of my all-time faves once it's done. I really want to go into why but I'd prefer to wait until I've beaten it.
Nearing 70 hours - it's making a run at being as long as Golden too when you make a habit of doing every guild request you run across.Comment

Re: Trails in the Sky: SC
So got some questions.
Is the battle system turn based or that trashy real time combat and is the first game before this required before playing this.

Re: Trails in the Sky: SC
You can think of FC and SC as one REALLY long game combined. Strictly speaking FC isn't "required" to be played first, but you're really missing some important backstory for SC (which could be considered the "main" story for the most part). SC does gloss over the first game's main plot events, but there's no substitute for playing through it yourself. You'll gain a much better understanding of the game's setting and characters if you do.
I will warn you about one thing. If you play the game the way it's intended - that is, doing all of the Bracer quests you're given in each region - both games will be a grind. But at the same time, you really do need the money and levels you get from those quests in order to progress through the main story. And for me at least, the dialogue throughout those missions (except the monster slaying ones) kept it interesting enough for me to get through them and bridge the gap to the main missions. Despite being entirely text except for a few battle quotes, the narratives of these two games drive the story ahead so well.Comment

Both are turn-based with a bit of Strategy RPG mixed in (your party and the enemies move around a grid and have ranges to their movement and attacks). The turn order can also be interrupted on command with a character's "S-Break" (think Final Fantasy limit break).
