    Morrowind Overview

Could someone give me a quick overview on Morrowind: GOTY? I just got the new GI today (it came late for some reason) and read the Cover Story about Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and my interest in Morrowind is growing.

I basically have little to no clue as to what goes on in the game, such as character design, weapons, story, etc. The only thing I know is that you could be a werewolf and thats about it.

So, if anybody is willing to shed some light on Morrowind for me, and I'm sure some other gamers have some questions too since Fable has been released and new RPG gamers have emerged...

    Re: Morrowind Overview

It's just like the first Morrowind but the two expansions are included in it. There is A LOT to the game before you get to that point. You can go anywhere on the map and do about anything. There are several races to choose from and lots of different attributes that you can choose to improve. Pretty dark story with quite a few weapons, definitely worth it to get it. You got to see it for yourself though. And I only have the first Morrowind on Xbox.

I guess I'm really wondering if you can a "gallant knight," ride a horse, and weld a kickass sword (ala Excalibur)?

No horses that I know of but if you learn the spell you can levitate and fly around and wield a kickass sword.

                            Re: Morrowind Overview

I would argue that character customization is one of the strongest parts of the game. You can choose from 10 different races each with their own inate strengths and weaknesses. The game also has over 20 ready made classes to choose from such as Knights, Archers, Battlemages, Assassins, Monks etc.
You can also create your own custom class assigning your own baseline skill set. I created a class called the Omniblade where my character began with a natural affinity for all sharp edged weapons.

There are 8 general attributes: things such as Strength and Speed

There are 4 derived Attributes: Ex. health, magicka

These attributes govern all the skills you can learn. There are 3 general skill categories.

Combat Arts: Ex. Long Blade, Heavy Armor, Block

Magic Arts: Ex. Enchant, Destruction, Restoration

Stealth Arts: Ex. Sneak, Acrobatics, short blade

Every category under each art has sub categories for example having a high long blade skill lets you more effectively use katanas, longswords, broadswords, claymores, etc. Each school of magic has at least a half a dozen spells in it.

I've only just given you a glimpse of the depth of the game.

To me the only shortcomings of the game are lack of fluidity in the melee combat animations, lack of physical changes in the player models to reflect any change in attributes(I know I'm unfairly judging the game on current gen technology- i.e. Fable and San Andreas- the locked in player model may be the only way to do this- and that isn't worth it)

The most important area of the game that is somewhat bothersome is the lack of dynamic, proactive, independent behavior by the NPC's. You can have an encounter with a person by the side of the road and they will stay there for the remainder of the game, weeks or months(in game) later. This is what detracts from the story somewhat. You have to generate all the emotions yourself.

I'm really looking forward to ES: IV given the new technologies they will have at their disposal.

Feel free to ask any more questions you'd like.
