2017 one of the best years in gaming?

I know it is still early part of 2017 but would you agree that this is looking like one of the best years for video games ever? Zelda is amazing all time favorite game now. Horizon I have not had a lot of time to play but can tell from the little bit that it is a good/great game. Then you still have things like Yooka-layee, Mario odyssey, Splatoon 2 also what is looking like 2 good sonic games in the same year, Injustice 2 and then games like Spider-Man that may be 2017. Man if only I had more time to play games because man this year is looking incredible!

I think the discussion will begin and end with Red Dead Redemption 2 (assuming it gets released this year).

That actually raises an interesting question: What was the best year in gaming?

I think it would be during the last generation since we simply don't get as many releases in this generation as we did during the PS3/Xbox era. But an exact year? I have no idea.

In October 1958, Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game. It was a very simple tennis game, similar to the classic 1970s video game Pong, and it was quite a hit at a Brookhaven National Laboratory open house.

The year a "real interactive" game was produced. The start of it all.

I will say that 2017 has started off excellent and could very well be the best. The quality of the games have been impressive. Since this is a sports gaming site I have to say that Madden 17, FIFA 17, NBA 2k17, and PES17 are some of the finest representations of sports video games ever played. Add MLB The Show 17 which should surpass 16 and all we have is NHL (which is moving in the right direction) to move us towards sports heaven bliss! Hoping this trend in sports gaming keeps improving every year!

Prior to this year, I have to say 2004. In that year we had to play;

MLB 04, High Heat, All Star Baseball, MVP 04, MVP College Baseball 04

NFL GameDay 04, Maddan 04, NCAA Football, NFL ESPN 2K4

NBA Live 04, NBA Inside Drive 04, NBA 2k4

NHL 04, NHL 2k4, NHL Rivals

A little bit of everything for everyone

This is a good topic because 2017 is quickly becoming one of the best ever due to MANY things

1)We are getting a new Dirt game with Dirt 4.
2)We are getting project Cars 2 which includes rally now
3)We are "supposedly" going to be able to finally play Gran turismo on PS4
4)Persona 5 is coming out on PS4 and fans have been wanting a new one
5)madden goes to the frostbite engine
6)Red Dead redemption 2 is coming out end of year and is built off the new tech available to PS4 and Xbox One instead of the GTA 5 hd/remake engines
7)The heir apparent to Mario 64 is coming out end of year and is said to be a "massive game" and "THE ONE Mario GAME" Myromoto would take on an island .
8)Zelda Breath of The Wild exceeded all expectations and is the clear cut GOTY AND Best game Ever made in the last decade at least
9)Nintendo has released prob their best console since GameCube
10)Scorpio might bring console gaming VERY close to PC gaming
11)Xenoblade chronicles 2 MIGHT JUST ALSO COME OU!!!!
12)PS4 gets a boost mode to help older non patched games out with framerates being more steady
13)Patriots won the super bowl(OK OK I threw that in there but it's a game right?!?!)
14)Fifa and NBA 2k games coming to a handheld!!!
15)Nioh was a pleasant surpise in the vein of the best boyonetta,Devil may cry and ninja gaiden games while also being a good Dark sould variant
16)Tekken 7,Injustice 2 and marvel vs Capcom fighting games!
17)a new star wars a new blade runner a new aliens (Yes not gaming but for gamers some of the best films)

I could KINDA go on but just off the top of my head its SUPER impressive

Re: 2017 one of the best years in gaming?

Thus far, 2017 is definitely one of the best years in gaming for me but there's still over nine months to go so while it's one of the best now, it could easily go the other way by year's end. Hopefully not but I wouldn't be surprised.

1) Resident Evil VII kicked off the year for me in a good but not great way. Was great for the first two thirds of the game but the last third completely fell off for me. 8/10 overall in my opinion.

2) For Honor was a damn good game that I still have to finish but will definitely be at least an 8/10 for me.

3) Ghost Recon Wildlands will also be at least an 8/10 for me based on the open beta. Once I finish For Honor, I'll start the actual game.

4) Horizon: Zero Dawn is by far this year's best game and nothing else comes close in my opinion. Graphically, a 10/10. Music, sound and voice acting, a 9/10. Gameplay is a 9 or a 10. Story and characters is a 9 or a 10. Haven't fully decided but could be a 9.5/10 for me personally. 130 hours in. Second most played game ever for me after The Witcher III. Will most likely be tied for being the best game this generation in my opinion and in some ways, surpasses The Witcher III.

5) 2017 being my best year will all be based on the last four months of 2017. Early on has been great. The middle will most likely be slow as usual which will be great for me as these few months will give me time to clear out some of my backlog. The end should be good though. For me personally, im expecting the new AC game, possibly Far Cry 5, The Evil Within 2 and the new Wolfenstein game.

.
I agree with the first paragraph, feel the same way. Depending on what actually comes out vs what gets delayed this could be a year to remember for sure. Says a lot because 2016 was AWESOME, imo.

As far as RE7, sometimes I feel like I was the only one who was blown away by this game. I played it beginning to end and couldn't get enough. I thought it reinvents the series in just a wonderful way, but I could be wrong. Was a great way to start the year for me.

For Honor is the only big game I haven't played so far this year. I didn't buy it because I was worried it would fall off, player base wise, pretty rapidly.

I enjoyed 2016 a lot as five of the eleven games that I completed all hit my 9/10 scale. I don't think that 2017 will give me as many 9/10 games but it's very early so that could change but overall, I think that it would be better. Of course, I do have several games from 2016 that I haven't played/completed and that will most likely bring down my overall average.

RE VII wise was great for the first two thirds with my one major complaint being that it's in first person which I have always seen as a cheap way out for any type of horror game because it's truly the only way to make the player feel trapped, scared, paranoid, concerned, tense, etc. Can't really do that in third person but even in first person, I personally don't ever get that feeling because im 38, none of these games are going to scare me and im expecting most of the jump scares and predicted a few of them while playing RE VII before they happened. The first person perspective also impacts the gameplay in a bad way. The field of view is limited and the combat is good but wasn't satisfying for me.

I rate games in four different categories with a fifth category only applied to open world games. For RE VII, I had graphics and music categories a 9/10 each but story/characters and gameplay at a 7/10 which overall makes it an 8/10. The beginning of the game is great. Truly felt like old school RE. Was awesome but once you get to the "character choice decision", the entire game falls off a cliff. I simply lost interest from that point forward. Didn't like the twist/aspect/direction the game went. Jack Baker was a great bad guy until that last fight and just went downhill for me from there.

Hated the ending. Personally, I have the a lot of the same complaints with The Evil Within (8.5/10) but I think that overall, it's a better survival horror game than RE VII. Subtract the first person perspective and RE VII loses what most praised it for. Also, the puzzles sucked, hated them and were all the same. One character after a certain point simply is never seen or heard from again which is like, WTF? Where did that character go?

RE VII is a step in the right direction after the beyond horrible RE 6 and above average RE 5 but Capcom really should go back to third person, put in better puzzles and make it feel more like old school RE which is what RE VII did but once you leave the residence, it feels less and less that way. I do agree that it was a good way to start the year though and im fully expecting RE 8 before this gen ends.

As you know, im only a single player guy so I don't play For Honor online. I do understand your view though because if the community is small, not much point in playing the game unless you're just going to play the campaign.

Great March so far. Nothing in Jan/Feb. Horizon Zero Dawn released February 28th, so I'm counting it as a March game.

But best ever? We'll see. We have 2 great games in 2017 and a few good ones. Zelda is the best game I've played this year, Horizon is an easy second. I don't even have a 3rd at this point, would probably have to be Ghost Recon by default, but if it finishes in my top 10, it's definitely not the best ever LOL

Hard to say, but if Red Dead 2 comes out, and if Mario comes out, and they are classics, it would be a top tier year

I think it would be 2006 or 2007. Basically the start of the X360/PS3 era. A lot of new IPs came out (they make up the biggest franchises today) and there was a lot of innovation going on. Just to name a few:

Mass Effect 1 (2007)
Bioshock 1 (2007)
COD4 (2007)
Halo 3 (2007)
Uncharted 1 (2007)
Civ IV (2007)
Orange Box (2007)
Gears of War (2006)

2004 was incredibly good as well, to name a few:

Half life 2
KOTOR
Halo 2
GTA SA
NCAA 2004
WoW

I miss the days when publishers took chances and brought something new to the table. 2017 is off to a great start, a lot of new fresh ideas are coming to the table that are pushing gaming in the right direction.

I think that it is pretty clear that it's been a great Q1. I have no idea whats coming out the next few months though so not sure what to expect.
