    Xbox Next: 3 Versions?!?!

I found this article on theinquirer.net:

Xbox Next and Xbox Next HD are planned for Autumn 2005, whereas the Xbox Next PC is pencilled in for Autumn 2006. The standard Xbox Next will not include a hard drive, which will allow Microsoft to cut costs on this basic unit. Xbox Next HD, as you might imagine, does include a hard drive and will offer increased functionality based on this. Xbox Next PC is, according to the presentation, an entry-level PC that runs Windows and all standard PC software. It also includes CD Burner, Wireless keyboard, mouse and controller and will work best connected to a high-definition TV or PC monitor. Media Center functionality - like movies, music and photos - is also included. The device will also play most available PC games.

So, we can expect Xbox Next in 2005-one with a hard drive and one without. I wonder what this is going to do to the price gap between the two units. I can't imagine that ANY gamer wouldn't purchase the hard drive version in favor of the base model. Even if the cost differential was $75 or $100. Now that we got introduced to the useful and now very necessary hard drive which allows us to RIP custom soundtracks and play them in our games, I don't think Gamers are going to want to back to the old days of 'Developers taste is what you get.'

Are you guys more inclined to purchase the Hard Drive Model or Base Model? As far as the Xbox PC goes, well, I don't think people are going to purchase another PC to play games when they already have a PC in their home.

theinquirer.net = "grain of salt" on this article. They know about as much as anyone else does, which is all specualtion till MS comes out and makes an announcement.

microsoft has to seriously consider what it is trying to do if it plans to bring out different models on their next console. You are now fragmenting your userbase and causing increased time needed for the developers to be able to handle the least common denominator and at the same time use the increased functionality of the more functional unit.

I dont think this will happen.

I'd personally choose to get a model with a HD over one without, but keep in mind that we're not necessarily the norm. MS needs a cheaper alternative to grab the "Mommy, Mommy, can I get a Xbox" crowd, if it's too expensive then parents won't buy them for birthdays, christmas, or whenever, and kids won't be able to save up for it.

If it is true that they are coming out with 3 systems I would be more inclined to buy the system with a hard drive.

I don't like the idea of fragmenting the user base. MS needs to just give everyone the HD, and eat the loss on the hardware to keep the price down. It's not like they can't afford it. We don't need that crap where the harddrive is barely supported, like the PS2 HD.

                    Hey Bacardi!

Other than Microsoft themselves, do you know of another source that supports the suggestion that this article did regarding the three different versions of Xbox?

Someone else had a good point about 'Designing games for the lowest common denominator.' This is NEVER a good idea. As evidenced by some game developers designing a game for PS2 first, and then porting it over to the Xbox which has more capabilities. If this is the case, then I hope they abandon the 'Base' model all together in favor of the Hard Drive model.

i have read a few other "sources" if you can call them that speculating different version of a console. But again, this is the internet, and many rumors circulate till a big announcement is made. I think its suicide for MS to force developers to support not only different platforms, but also different version of the platforms? what we will get is garbage ports.

I for one will stay very clear of this kind of crap if indeed it turns out to be true.
