    The Long Dark

This gives me Firewatch vibe. I just hope it's as enjoyable as that game was. I'll be keeping my eye on this one. I'm most interested in the story mode.

The Long Dark is really two experiences. Survivor Mode is a non-narrative, open-world survival sandbox where the only goal is to survive for as long as you can. Our gameplay philosophy is to not hold your hand — we don’t give you anything. You have to*earn*your survival.

You have to figure everything out yourself, just as you would if you were really dropped into the middle of the savage Canadian wilderness. You’ll struggle to manage your resources — food, fuel, your clothing and tools, and all your own physical properties like fatigue and dehydration — to constantly push yourself forward in search of better shelter, better gear, and the hope to see another sunrise

Inspired by stories like Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, Wintermute is our narrative mode. It’s a five-episode story about bush pilot Will Mackenzie, who along with Dr. Astrid Greenwood, crashes in the middle of the Canadian wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious geomagnetic disaster. Wintermute builds on our core survival gameplay from Survivor Mode by adding a rich storyline and cast of characters whose trust you’ll need to earn if you want to survive.

We’re launching the first two episodes on August 1 — Episode One: “Do Not Go Gentle,” and Episode Two: “Luminance Fugue,” with the remaining three Wintermute episodes arriving throughout the rest of 2017 and part of 2018. At least, that’s our current plan! In the first two episodes, you play Mackenzie, but you’ll also get the opportunity to experience the story as Dr. Greenwood in future episodes. Each episode is about five hours of gameplay, so between Survival Mode and Wintermute, there’s a lot of great gaming to be had in The Long Dark!

I couldnt wait for Firewatch, but I hated that game.

It forced you to do stuff. I hated that.
Hopefully this game is more sandbox and not linear.

        You hated Firewatch? Booooooo! Lol.

The blurb I posted states that it gives you a survival mode that's exactly that. So that might be more what you're looking for. I'm actually hoping the story is a bit more linear, myself. I like that they're providing us with two different modes.

I've played The Long Dark a nice little bit so far. Its still in early access on PC and only has free play survival mode. Supposedly they are working on the campaign mode.

Gameplay its basically you against mother nature. The art style is fantastic in my opinion and the games vibe gives a very lonely but also majestic feeling.

All in all it was worth the $20 or whatever I spent on it.

Is Survival mode kind of like Don't Starve?

or can you play the game without being forced to do certain tasks.

Thats what I didnt like about Firewatch.
I also hated how they did that In Hitman Absolution

Not really, you are in the freezing cold so most your time is fighting not to freeze to death. Finding wood to burn, better clothing, food to eat, etc. The way weather is handled is nice, its always in the snow but sometimes the sun is out and you can go out & about for most the day. If a storm hits you out though, all bets are off, you will die trying to find shelter unless there is cliffs or high points to block the wind, if its open land then a snow shelter and lots of hope is your only chance.

Wolves & bears are your only threat outside of the weather, but they are not really that dangerous unless you stumble upon one without noticing it. Most of your time is fighting to survive in the sense of Naked & Afraid. Mother Nature is a bitch!

Challenge modes feature things you must do. One of the challenges for instance, a bear is stalking you and you must locate a certain rifle to kill the bear before it can find you and kill you. They are supposedly going to add more of these.

Campaign mode isn't released yet but will be similar to Firewatch I'd imagine.

The first time I played this I was surprised by how long the night was. Then I put the title together and felt like an idiot. I really do appreciate the art style of this game. It sounds silly, but I always loved the book Hatchet as a kid, so this game allowed me to survive the Canadian wilderness like Brian did haha.

Fist pound for mentioning Hatchet. That was such an amazing book to read as a kid.

Yeah...sandbox is completely open. Random spawn and you try to find things to survive. I've put a lot of hours into this and it's relaxing yet fun. Permadeath gives you the risk of being stupid and losing that 10+ hours of starting.

Sandbox is a lot of fun, but looking forward to a bit more depth. Once you learn the maps and get yourself on decent footing there's not a lot of challenge. The hardest difficulty is pretty crazy hard, i don't have patience or time for that currently.

Annoying that the recent countdown was just for another countdown (to story mode in August). Devs catching crap on blogs for that.

Pretty much where I'm sitting currently with the game. Sandbox while fun, its lacking enough depth to keep me booting the game up. I'm hoping the Story mode is good enough to keep me interested.
