Mafia 3, though that took place in the 60s, so it is a lot easier to discuss something that's removed and easy to compartmentalize. This is going to be tougher. I trust most everyone who posts regularly to understand where the line is, but it only takes one.

As long as everyone sticks to the premise of the story and characters in the game and keeps their own personal opinions and feelings out of it, there shouldn't be a problem whatsoever.

•You can play the entire story solo or in two-player co-op.
•You play as the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana, players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden's Gate.
•Protagonist is customizable meaning you can choose gender and skin color.
        •Antagonist's name is Joseph Seed.
•You can fly planes and take part in aerial dogfights.
•Vehicles include American muscle cars, ATVs, boats, and big rigs.
•Weapons include guns, grenades, sledgehammers, and baseball bats.
•You can recruit other people to fight for you.

•Ubisoft Montreal is leading development, with support from Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Kiev, Ubisoft Shanghai, and Ubisoft Reflections.

Not happy about the customizable protagonist. Prefer a preset character with a story and background. Even worse for me is that I'll never understand the point in creating a character that you can't see due to the game being in first person. I understand in regards to co-op and multi-player but solo, it makes no sense to me. Oh well. I love Far Cry and Ubisoft so it's easily a pre-order and day one pick up.
I want to learn more about the plot but this might have saved the game for me. Great choice to make your character customizable.

As far as a story goes, I would have to imagine its a scenario where the US government has pretty much fallen apart and Montana is lawless. If that is the case then the plot would be pretty believable.

Polygon has a couple well written articles and one focuses on cults and how they infiltrate small rural areas. Fairly interesting and gives me hope they don't resort to bashing the player over the head with outlandish, over the top enemies.

I love that the protagonist can be customized. Representation in games and entertainment matter. For minorities, it's exciting to be able to have a character that represents them instead of always having a preset character where in the past, always represent's the majority. I think it's a positive thing in gaming these days. Give gamers choice. Any game that's given me a choice, i've always chosen a character that represents me. This is one of the best features on ME: Andromeda.

Story and character wise, I will always prefer a preset character simply because it makes the most sense. Take a Witcher III and give that game a custom character instead of Geralt and the game's story, premise, history, etc. literally falls apart.

The entire "let's shoehorn a minority, gay, lesbian, transgender, etc." character into any game just for the sake of doing it isn't progress or advancement. It's not a step forward and if anything, it's two steps backwards. There must be a valid point and reason as to why certain characters are in the game and what their storyline is, their purpose, the history behind that character, etc. Just throwing it in there or allowing you to customize any character is more of a negative than a positive. And this doesn't even include the fact that if you're playing solo, you literally can't see the character that you spent 30 minutes or so creating in the first place so really, what's the point in creating a character that you can't see because of the first person perspective?

I said this in the Mafia III topic and I'll say it again. I'm Caucasian and Italian yet loved playing as Lincoln Clay and not only bringing down the entire Italian mafia but I also wanted to bury them all and that's exactly what I did. Clay is black, Vietnam veteran, no nonsense, serious, wants revenge for being betrayed and having those he loved killed. In other words, no bullcrap. Clay is a very strong, confident black male character that has one hell of a history behind him in the game.

THAT is what makes a strong minority character. Doesn't matter if the character is white, black, blue, green, yellow or a freaking rainbow. It's not about what the character looks like and what the character is, it's all about WHO the character is and how that character is portrayed in the game's story and progression.

Having a custom character only presents a problem in this regard. The game starts out with you trying to arrest Seed and the cult basically takes you hostage and you need to escape. Similar to the opening of Far Cry 3 but you're alone. Let's be honest, a white male character has a far greater chance at surviving than a black male character who to be perfectly honest would probably be lynched in what, five minutes by those mother*******???

It's all about the context and premise, story and history of the character(s). Having a minority character which has been done several times just for the sake of doing it isn't helping, advancing or progressing a damn thing. All this does is make everything go backwards.

Regardless of how you create your character, im fully expecting the story and your character to be the same regardless of what he looks like. Only difference will probably be the voice. Hoping this isn't the case but im not expecting it to be anything more than a preset storyline for your character no matter what.

And back to the characters in general, take Ellie from TLOU(R). She's a lesbian but that literally means nothing because she's a strong character who should be even stronger in the sequel since she'll be older but if Naughty Dog focuses too much on her being a lesbian as opposed to the world and situation that she's in then it could end up being not only a failure in this regard but would also make the diversity of the character and diversity in games in general take a step back.

As for creating a character in general, I personally despise it regardless of the game. I prefer a preset character simply because the character should be more interesting with a background, history and purpose. Creating a "fake" character doesn't do anything for me. Also, I have realized that in a lot of games with a create a character feature, the character is a silent protagonist which im not a fan of. Obviously, it makes sense because the character is created but I hate it. Imagine playing a Witcher III and the guy never talks. Oh jeez, I would go nuts. Also, I never know how I want the character to look and a lot of times, options I want aren't available so that kind of wastes my time when I could actually be playing the game instead. One other reason is that with a custom character, it makes me feel like the developer/publisher is trying to take the easy way out because when you think about, for a custom character, they don't really have to go nuts with background, details, personal info, story and how the character actually is.

To each their own though. Either way, Far Cry 5 is a guaranteed pre-order and day one pick up for me as it's one of my favorite franchises.

Amazing how people on a forum always seem to have a problem with reading as if they can't. Oh well. Not being loud. Just my own personal opinion. Diversity can be done right and wrong. All depends on the context of how it's presented.

It's amazing how people on a forum can't read the TOS they signed up for.

The point you are making, no matter how valid you think it is, does not have a place on OS. Race/Religion/Sexual Preference is not discussed here. We talk about games and what we enjoy in them.

Let this post be the end of this entire back and forth.
