    Side Missions

Question does too many sides missions hurt good games? I just wanted to get your opinions on this topic.

My answer is yes because they tend to sidetrack me and I sometimes lose interest in the main story due to feeling like I must do them. This is the reason why it's been taking me soo long to finish games or not at all.

Depends on how the side missions are done. If the side missions tie into the main story line and unlock more of the story, that is a good thing. But lately in gaming, I noticed majority of the time side missions have nothing to do with the story and are just there. Tend to not do those kind of side missions.

The Witcher 3 set the bar really, really high.

The side missions were so engrossing and well written. In a game like Dragon Age Inquisition they often just feel like a giant chore.

I think it really does depend on the game. I've seen it hurt some games and help others. I'm somewhere in the middle on Horizon Zero Dawn. I hate the "run and help this random person" find a stick type of side quests, but if it somehow unlocks something in the game or better explains the world the game takes place in then it's okay.

If they are well thought out like in the Witcher 3 then I'm all in. If they are nothing but fetch quests like kill 3 birds and bring me their feathers then nope that's just a waste of time.

I love side missions. Makes the game longer and since I'm a cheapskate, that's good value. Lol!

I would put Zelda in the same boat as HZD in regards to side missions. Some tied in naturally with the main story, but there were a lot of "bring me the red feather from the 3rd bird you pass on the 2nd mountain" fetch quests.

I tend to not do many side missions for that reason.

                  Re: Side Missions

That's a tough question for sure, I actually stopped playing Dragon Age because of how bland the side quests were, ME:A had pretty tedious side quests but at least it helped flesh out the side characters, Skyrim had mundane side quests but I never minded doing them for some reason, Witcher 3 had amazing side quests.

I guess it just comes down to a game by game basis. They can help the game be better or can drop it off a cliff.

Yeah those are the worst kind especially if there's a second or third part to it.

                      Re: Side Missions

Agree with what everyone else has posted here. It seems like too often the side quests are just there to pad out the game's length artificially, and very often they are not particularly fun. They generally aren't particularly well thought-out, and the majority of them consist of the laziest filler like "go kill this guy" or "go get this item and bring it back to me".

I end up doing most of them due simply to gaming OCD (and also because it's usually a way to grind XP and/or money), but it's pretty rare that I find a side quest actually fun to do....

EDIT: examples of side quests done right IMO are Mass Effect 2 (those were great and also helped develop the crew's background) and usually any Rockstar game.
