Nintendo DS- Sucked in again...and loving it

    Well,

After watching G4TechTV before the pregame shows Sunday I felt a burning desire to own a Nintendo DS...

I had no intention of buying one of these things, I was going to wait until after Xmas and wait for the PSP and all that. But I got the urge and decided to go by my local Gamestop yesterday, I fugured I would show up, find out they only had enough for half their pre-orders, pick up a large coffee, and go home and wait for the early game on FOX.

I show up in at the store, wait in a short (20 min) line, walk up to the counter and say, "Uhmm, I'll take a DS and , uhmmm, a Mario DS, thanks."

"You have it pre-ordered", says the counter guy.

"No", I say. At this point I expect to be laughed out of the store. The counter guy looks at the other counter guy, shrugs his shoulders (not sure why), opens the case and slaps a DS down in front of me.

Bottowline , I got a DS without really trying and I am pleased. I think is a bit of a brick, but I don't mind that. It has a retro feel because it reminds me of those old clamshell Game and Watch games. Pure Nintendo, love it.

Anyone else pick one up at the last second? What do you guys think of the thing...
    Thanks for the advice.

I'm sorry, I think the DS technology is lagging behind the up coming competition. Plus the games are lame.

Well, the tech is lagging behind the PSP, but handheld's have never been about having the most power (i.e. Game Gear, Lynx, Wonderswan Color, even all better than GB, all destroyed by GB) but about instant fun during the ten minutes you are waiting for a bus.

Mario is fun, flat out. I was sitting on a bench playing Mario 64 and it really felt like i was playing Mario 64, not "Mario 64 on a Gameboy".

Half the launch games are lame, but Mario and Feel the Magic are solid titles for now.
        Thanks for the advice.

I'm assuming you mean PSP? Isnt that kind of like comparing the technology of N64 to Playstation? There are tradeoffs in both comparisons.

I think the second screen opens the door for new, innovative gameplay ideas, some of which we have already seen.

I, personally, would be happy to make games for either system.

I would like to get a DS because I think the dual screen thing is very innovative, but I'm gonna wait. I mean, I just bought the SP last Christmas! Also, if I want to play Mario 64 I guess I can break out the old N64, but man I hated those controllers.

Its not really the same game, though. In this one, you control Yoshi, Luigi, Mario, or Wario and they all have different abilities. I hear some of the levels have been changed. There are several minigames in there that you have to unlock that involve using the stylus. Also, theres a multiplayer game in there though I hear it sucks.

Its too bad you didnt like the controls on Mario 64. Those were absolutely revolutionary and still provide a model that many of us game developers like to emulate.

I got sucked into buying one as well, glad to see I wasn't alone..lol. I have had almost all of the Nintendo products, with the exception of the Virtual Boy.

I haven't got to mess around with it much, but played a little bit of Metroid...never have played before but was having fun with it.

After 24 hours or so I have no regrets. I have spent all my time playing the mini-games in Mario...and I just picked up Feel The Magic which I expect to be Tech-Demo-As-Launch-Title (Fantavision anyone), but hey I have never controlled a game with my breath before.....
                            Thanks for the advice.
