Shocked that Horizon Zero Dawn didn't win anything. It's the most beautiful console game I've ever seen.

I think BOTW was the right choice for GOTY but I think Horizon should have at least won something.

Horizon not winning a single award just further shows what a joke this show is.

                  Re: The Game Awards 2017

To be honest, I couldn't see Horizon winning any of the categories it was nominated for. It's still a great game and a game doesn't need to win an award to validate it as such, and it will likely get its fair share from others. This was a fantastic year for games both big and small, and many games didn't even get nominated for this awards show.

Having said that, I was really pleased with 3 category winners:
                  • Cuphead winning Best Art Direction. Artists and animators who aren't even apart of the video game industry rave about it. And for a reason, it might as well be art direction the game.

                  • What Remains of Edith Finch winning Best Narrative. But Wolfenstein II, Nier, Horizon, and Hellblade? Nope, this little game is a revelation in the way it inventively uses gameplay to connect you to a character and story that would only be possible in this medium.

                  • Melina Juergens winning Best Performance. Her performance in Hellblade is so good and goes beyond just good voice-acting. This game simply doesn't work without her performance. And what's crazy is she's Ninja Theory's video editor and this being the first time she did any kind of acting.

These are 3 of the 6 categories Horizon was nominated for too.

That leaves GOTY which fan voting factored into heavily. Best Action-Adventure which also included Zelda, Mario, Assassin's Creed, and Uncharted. Best Direction which again included Zelda and Mario, along with Wolfenstein II and Resident Evil VII.

And before someone says Nintendo bias, neither Zelda or Mario have won many awards for a decade despite having some highly critically acclaimed titles since then.

                    Re: The Game Awards 2017

You're right that Horizon doesn't need to an award to validate itself. However, not seeing Horizon winning any categories it was nominated for? I certainly understand how it lost any individual category, but it's just surprising that such a great game could receive so many nominations and come away with 0.

Art? Cuphead is very unique. Creativity/uniqueness often wins in these kind of award shows. Horizon not only looks better than most PC games it had a level of detail to the terrain and the monsters that I've never seen before. Cuphead wins on the creativity side (though I would argue that giant robot dinosaurs are also pretty creative), but I would say Horizon wins going away from the technical achievement standpoint.

GOTY? With fan voting it was going to be hard to beat out a Zelda game, but an upset wouldn't have surprised me. There is a reason Horizon was one of only 2 games to receive some kind of nomination in 6 categories.

Game Direction? I honestly think Zelda won this simply because of Zelda's history. Not just that Zelda is extremely popular, but the fact that it took Zelda in a different direction from the franchise norm. Horizon was just as easily deserving of that award on it's own merit without a legacy IP.

Best Action Adventure Game? Zelda wins again, and while I'm not surprised I have a hard time saying that Zelda was unequivocally better than Horizon.

My surprise comes from the fact that Horizon was, imo, at least on par with the winner in each one of these 4 categories but fell short in them. The 2 other nominations it received probably would have have been a surprise win, but 6 nominations and 0 awards is just surprising.

Cuphead has one of the most cohesive and well executed art directions seen in a game ever. It's also a technical achievement.

Zelda winning more categories outside of GOTY, to me lends credibility to the awards. If it had only won GOTY, my thoughts would've been Zelda and Nintendo fans really showed up and voted. With it winning Best Game Direction and Best Action-Adventure, it shows that the 51 critics on that panel thought just as highly of it.

Even with 6 nominations, which in stacked year is an achievement in of itself, it's not surprising to me that Horizon didn't win anything. Every year there's great games that don't win awards or that are barely recognized. Myself and others adore Yakuza 0, but it didn't get a single nomination.

                        Re: The Game Awards 2017

Cuphead was a technical achievement, but Horizon was just a higher caliber imo. I've never seen a game have the kind of detail down to the blades of grass like Horizon. It's not a knock on Cuphead's technical achievement, the games just excelled in different aspects of the category.

I don't think Zelda was undeserving of GOTY, but I do think the name had a lot to do with it. For instance, one of the awards it won was for best game direction, and a lot of the critical praise for that direction was that it was different from prior Zelda games. Then there was the "Best Action Adventure Game" category which it also beat Horizon in. I don't think anyone honestly believes that Zelda did not get an extra bump from it's IP here or any other category in which it won. I love Zelda so I'm not saying that it wasn't worthy of any of the awards, I'm just saying that it's name probably had more to do with winning some of the ancillary awards which in turn led to GOTY. Kind of a domino effect. So in that regard it's not surprising per se that Horizon didn't win, but it's still hard not to be surprised when such a very strong argument could be made for Horizon winning 4 of the 6 categories it had nominations in yet having 0 awards come through.

It's less of some kind of invalidation for the game awards and more of just mild shock that.

I actually hated Yakuza-0 lol, but that's a different story.

I guess it wasn't a category in these awards, but if it were, I'd give Horizon the best soundtrack, too. It was just amazing. There were times that I would just sit there and listen while staring off into those beautiful landscapes.
