    Call of Duty

Anyone play it yet? Impressions? Anyone planning on getting it?

I have it and thoroughly enjoy it, although a lot of people don't like it. Online plays smooth and is fun, it's a lot like Medal of Honor, which I used to love playing online for the PC.

Any other impressions? I'm thinking about picking this one up, but it hasn't gotten the best reviews. I wanna hear your input before I decide to rent/buy this game.

It's Medal of Honor on steroids. It's not as good as it's PC cousin, but it's pretty good. If you like Medal of Honor, you'll like this.

I'll be renting it this weekend. I'm not good at these types of games so whatever impressions I may give should be taken with a grain of salt.

                    Re: Call of Duty

We just had a long thread on this game at Digital Sports. My comments from that thread, in various snippets:

                    >>>>>>>

... it's Medal of Honor on steroids.

Not a bad game, but certainly nothing groundbreaking. This is Medal of Honor, seriously, with better atmospherics, bigger maps, squad mates and a lot more action surrounding you. An excellent feeling of the chaos of war.

But the game also has the same "pump five shots into him before he drops" game engine of MoH, with incredibly dopey AI. I can't tell you how many times I stood there reloading my weapon in plain sight of an enemy, and he didn't pop me.

The sniper rifle also is way too effective as a close combat weapon in this game. There's no sense to use any other weapon if you have one.

CoD also has the same linear maps as the MoH series. I had the feeling of "been here, done that" while playing this, as it felt so much like the MoH series.

I haven't tried CoD online yet, but I probably will.

My initial impressions after about two hours of play are that if you are a Medal of Honor fanatic and aren't tired of that series after four installments on the consoles, then you'll enjoy CoD. It also will help if you've never played any of the Ghost Recon games.

But if you're tired of MoH or never liked it or have played any Ghost Recon game, Call of Duty will leave you feeling lackadaisical. A decent, fun game, but there's no way on God's green Earth I would pay $50 for it. It's a decent pickup for less than $30.

If you're on the fence between Ghost Recon 2 and Call of Duty, it's no contest: Ghost Recon 2 is a far better game. More tense, more tactical, rewards creative tactics better, better graphics, seemingly more realistic.

                    ***

Hardly any tactics are needed to be successful, at least in Stalingrad. It's a case of stand and unload that clip as fast as you can, killing everything in sight.

A far cry from the fun of Ghost Recon 2.

                    ***

Regarding CoD, if it had the "one-shot" damage mechanics of GR 2 and a less linear structure, it would be killer. The "fog of war" and atmosphere are terrific.

But GR 2 and all of the Clancy games for the Xbox and PS2 have raised the ante for military shooters. It's no longer acceptable to have such linearity and such unrealistic damage effects in a military shooter, at least not to me.

I don't think I'm alone in that assessment, either.

                    ***

There's no motivation for anyone with the PC version to buy the console version since it's far inferior, and there are many console gamers like me who don't buy watered-down console versions of PC games if the PC version is far superior. I know that's stubborn, but a watered-down PC port just screams "sh*t game" unless there were technical reasons for the inferior port.

That's not the case with CoD, I don't think. I think it was dumbed down to appeal to the "console crowd," which is unfortunate.

                    ***

If Stalingrad is the best, then this game will continue to disappoint. I'm on the Stalingrad level, and it's not compelling me much at all. I found the Omaha Beach landing in MoH Frontline on the consoles to be much more hair-raising than crossing the Volga at the start of the Stalingrad mission.

                    <<<<<<<

Hope this helps. This is a decent game, but it has the "been there, done that" feeling seeping through it from the minute you turn it on. No way this game is worth $50. Not a chance.

                    Take care,
                    PK
