    Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PS4, XB1, Switch)

Okay, so we don't have a SOLID release date yet, but close enough for a thread.

    Due out Fall 2018.

Lots of info on the game here:

Just as a general idea of what the game's going to be, expect a return to VC1-style gameplay again, first and foremost. This isn't going to be like that last Valkyria game they released - I can vouch for that having played the demo.

The controllable faction this time isn't Gallia, but the Federation (I forget the full name) - the other major power opposite the Empire. I think they appeared one time in VC1, if memory serves. As you might expect, they're in direct opposition with the Empire as well.

More info as we find out more, although I'll wait until we actually get English trailers . The game launches in Japan on March 22, and there is already a Japanese demo available for download (which you can play on a US PS4 if you have a JPN PSN account).

Console demo has been released today. Can't speak for XB1 and Switch, but it's kinda hard to get to on the PS Store. Have to go to Free > Demos and then sort by Newest first. It probably eventually shows up without sorting but you're gonna have to scroll through a lot of demos to get there. I wouldn't have known it was there without reading an article about it today. I assume it's the same demo as the Japanese one I played a few months ago, but I'm downloading it again to find out for sure.

Digital pre-orders have also gone live.

Also, I edited it into the thread title but it didn't take - the game is coming to PC as well.

Edit: Well, thanks to the English demo I know now what the timeframe is for this game....spoiler tag if you're curious:

Preload probably starts tonight if you pre-ordered digitally. This has already been a great JRPG month with DQ11, and it's about to get better.

                Re: Valkyria Chronicles 4 (PS4, XB1, Switch)

This is gonna ramble a bit, as most of my first impression threads do.

Started playing at midnight and went pretty much all night. I will say that there's definitely a "sameness" sort of feel compared to VC1, just as I felt in the demo - both in graphics and gameplay. That's not necessarily a bad thing since the game in question is from many years ago. But if you go in expecting something drastically different you might be disappointed. There was one part of Chapter 4 that really stood out to me graphically - something they NEVER could have pulled off on the PS3. So far that's the main way to tell I've been playing a PS4 game and not a remastered PS3 one. It looks nice and clean, it just doesn't seem like a different game...yet. Some of the music is re-used too, if that bothers you.

That said, I'm not that far in and there are new wrinkles being added seemingly every mission, so who knows what things will look like once I have all of the game's functions. Love the new grenadier class for their bunker/turret-busting ability, and the fact that they can provide interception fire during the enemies' turn.

Since the core gameplay hasn't changed much, a lot of the strategy and tactics remain the same as well. Scout rushing still seems to be the most effective way to finish the maps in a short amount of time - missions are still graded by how many turns it takes to complete them. Personally I find that extreme risk way of playing (and reloading the save when you inevitably die) kind of boring and repetitive, so on my first playthrough I'll be pacing myself and not worrying too much about the grade I get. In addition to the skirmishes you can now replay any story mission if you need to pick up some extra experience points (though I haven't needed to to progress in the game and hopefully won't).

More later as my thoughts expand and I see more of what the game has to offer. I can say so far that if you enjoyed the first one (and want more of what made that game so good) you're likely to enjoy this one as well.

That's a call I obviously couldn't make myself, since I got both...lol. Fortunately DQ11 had an earlier release date which allowed me to get through all of it + most of the postgame before VC4 dropped. Besides, I can't pass judgement on VC4 anyway, since I'm only part-way through it.

I'm gonna start by saying a bit about DQ since I'm being asked, even though it's off-topic:

There's some interesting parallels though in the two games' design, because neither of them have changed a whole lot from previous entries. The Dragon Quest series is the undisputed king of not changing so that isn't really a surprise. While DQ11 may look different with its (optional) free-movement system, moving around the battlefield doesn't change the turn based gameplay, or anything about how the enemies target you. So, what you can expect from that game is another 80-100 - ish hour adventure (longer for postgame, which is as long as some full games by itself), with a story that has its high points and low points but is undoubtedly one of the darkest plotlines I've seen in the series. Its difficulty is also a bit customizable and that's a good thing, because the normal difficulty of the game is pretty easy from what I've experienced. There are options you can select at the start of a game that will make it tougher on you and force you to use more of the game's systems (the equipment forging, mostly), and any of them can be disabled (but not re-enabled) at any point in the game.

As for VC4, I can say that the demo is pretty representative of the full game itself, so I think that's a good way to decide if you're interested in it. I've gotten a few extra mobility options beyond what's in the demo, and there seems to be a greater variety of missions than there were in VC1 - it's not always capturing bases. But anyway, the demo is the first three chapters of the game itself and will introduce you to the new class.

I don't really need to PM you for that - the last major one I played before that was Persona 5. And my thoughts on that are pretty well-documented in that game's thread.

I don't have an opinion on one over the others.

Valkyria Chronicles is a really great game. I was really happy when it was released on PC since I'm not a console gamer.
