    SCUM

So I picked up SCUM today on release and sank a good 5 hours into it. It's basically DayZ but a ton of potential to be a DayZ killer. I thoroughly enjoyed it tonight.

I got rushed by 5 zombies aka poppets, had to take shelter on a second floor balcony and dispatch them. It was a pretty intense moment as the swarmed to the sound of gun fire.

I saw a horse and a boar, also got rushed by a boar while walking through the woods.

Killed a goat for food and was living like a king, food for days!

Finished the evening at the top of the Fame leaderboard

    My character after day 1.

I have been following the development of this for a while.

One thing I am not sure of though. Is there any single player offline component that is playable?

I have a ton of other questions, but I dont want to blast you this early in your play time.

Yup straight out the box there is a Single Player option which is offline only and a separate "Online" option with 64 player servers (Look at the last pic, that's the menu, see Single Play). Ask away man, I might not know everything yet but I got in a good 4 to 5 hours last night.

Ok here are a couple of questions that I can't tell from stream watching

        1. How dense is the Zombie population? Is it a constant threat type of thing? Do they horde you or is it more of a straggler thing?

        2. Is there base building yet?

2a. Can you fortify a position? What happens when you are offline? Is there a way to store supplies, food etc besides carrying everything with you?

        3. How is the crafting system?

Thanks for answering any of these if you have time.

The zombie population varies, some times it's loaded(10 or so) but they are spaced out somewhat, the challenge is not firing a shot so a melee weapon is critical. If you shoot they will swamp from all over and they sprint FAST! Other villages there might be 3 or 4 and they are very spread out. Other times you might run for an hour and never see one in the country side but you might get blindsided by a bear or boar. A buddy of mine was walking through woods, got charged by a boar and died.

          2. Is there base building yet?
No not yet, it's on the road map and more complex crafting.

2a. Can you fortify a position? What happens when you are offline? Is there a way to store supplies, food etc besides carrying everything with you?
As of now there is a crate and make shift shelter you can craft but all I've found so far is carrying everything on me. No fortifying positions as of yet.

          3. How is the crafting system?
The crafting system is pretty easy and detailed surprisingly. The one draw back is it's not massive yet. You have maybe 15 or 20 weapons you can craft, 20 to 25 "Other" supplies like meat skewers for cooking meat, shelter, fireplaces, rag bundles, etc. Lastly you have maybe 10 to 15 food combos. That's about it, so while the crafting is good it's far from deep. I hope to see this greatly expanded.

Thanks for answering any of these if you have time.

As of now I'd say the primary "fun" of the game is similar to DayZ where your interactions with other players will be what brings out the random interesting moments. Offline might get a tad bit boring after 50 to 100 hours, once you go and explore all the locations. The one good thing is the map is large with lots of areas to explore but without the fear of running into another person I could see it becoming boring online. Part of the tense moments is entering a village knowing at any moment another player could be thinking the same and you could die losing dozens of hours with a geared character.

            Re: SCUM

Day 2 is in the books. I set out for a small military complex to try and acquire some better weapons. I've been sitting with a .22 since Day 1 and looking to make use for my scopes and rail fittings. Unfortunately I didn't find any new weapons but I did find a much needed camping backpack with tons more space , an 8x scope, some rail attachments, and a bullet proof vest. The day had some intense moments with a thunderstorm rolling in right when I entered the complex, the mech's coming down hard on my position, and me struggling to find a way out the complex with a hail of gun fire coming my way. Luckily I found my way out and managed to get to safety.

As the morning sun rose, I could see the prison walls in the distance. I must find a way out!

Morning sun as I travel the country side.

Scouting a village before I head in, need to make sure I see no players.

Soaking up some vitamin D with a make shift camp, wondering how the bass fishing is in this little pond

            The loadout.

Rsky business entering this mech filled complex loaded with trees.

A thunderstorm hit right as I was entering the military complex.

Yesss, go the other way Mr. Mech!

Low crawling and stalking a deer.

Preparing for the perfect kill shot.

Day 2 in the books, camping backpack, sight rails, 8x scope, and a bullet proof vest was the score for the day.

Thank you soooo much. I really appreciate you. I could see where some would get bored solo-ing but I am usually pretty good. I have been solo-Ark since the beginning and have managed to beat two maps on my own.

Plus from what I have read, they are planning on adding a single player campaign, NPC's and other goodies for us anti social types. LOL

I don't mind playing with friends, I just really don't like playing with randoms and my schedule is so weird it is really hard to play at a consistent time. I usually end up getting ganked by randoms who are much better at this kind of stuff. I am more into the survival, explorer, base building, forming my own narrative kind of thing. These games have recently really set off a love in me and I have been playing a lot them and really sinking into this genre.

Yeah, I figure if I can pump over 100 hours into No Man's Sky since the NEXT update was released, playing entirely with networking/multi-player turned off and just going about things as a single-player game, I would probably manage just fine in this. If they add NPCs, base building, a campaign type stuff down the road, hey, it'll certainly scratch my survival itch. Almost like a survival mode zombie Fallout or something.

I hear ya, I'll tell you this, it surely has a ton of potential if they can get in everything they want in a timely manner. The movement is super smooth, vaulting is in from the jump, looting seems really good so far, and zombie AI seems to be done well. All in all, my only real complaint is there must be a memory leak right now. My 1700, 1070 Ti rig will go from fps around 120 down all the way into the 30s after a couple hours in the game. Only solution is to close game and reopen. I'm sure it's something which will get fixed in the coming weeks but it is annoying to say the least.

You design a character and then set off to survive the harsh zombie "prison" game show world. It's basically a copy of DayZ if you know anything about it, but with a slight reduction of simulation/realism and a little more emphasis on silly fun.

They did create the most sophisticated replica of the human metabolism, so that's super realistic. More realistic than anything I've seen on a computer, even outside of gaming. It accounts far everything from the vitamins & minerals in certain foods, to the calories you burn and intake.

A simple example is, say your character is hungry and he is losing energy. Now say you find a watermelon and eat it. Your energy or hungry won't go down immediately. It must pass through your small intestines(modeled in the stats), get broken down into the nutrients it holds, then slowly gets added to your energy level. It also models your large intestines and how much waste they are holding. So you will have to do #1 and #2, which can lead to some troubling situations. A good example of this, say you eat some raw meat and your character gets sick from the meat, you might get diarrhea, now say you get into a heated gun fight, well your character might suddenly pop a squat and "explode" all over the ground leaving you defenseless in a critical situation.

Another play on that first scenario, if you were hungry and ate a watermelon, you will extract far more water than anything else but a little fiber so it would do little to carve your hunger.

It's a very complex system which lends itself very well to a survival game.

                      Vitamins monitored - A, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, D, E, and K

Minerals - Ca, Fe, Mg, P, K, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Se

Nutrients - Protein, Carbs, Fat, Fiber, Water, Sugar, Saturated Fat, and Sodium

Look over this screen to get an idea just how detailed the model of the metabolism is.

Caught a light rain storm at night and body temp was dropping! So I took off all the wet clothes, lit a fire, and dried off before continuing the trek.

Lit a torch as I headed out and continued deep into the wilderness, when suddenly this little drone flew over with his light on to check me out.

Morning sunrise came and I'm on the road again.

This tiny village was loaded with zombies, I counted 12 in total. Here you can only see a couple.

                            ^^^^^^^ This

This is what has me intrigued about this game. The extreme survival metrics. I mean there are plenty of survival games out there. But this one survival can depend on WHAT you eat as much as the fact that you just ate. On top of the fact of this mechanic you also have what and how much you eat and drink having an effect on your body visually as well as overall health wise.

From my understanding you actually have to work at staying in shape to be able to handle life in the game as well as the combat elements. Start getting heavy and you loose stamina and energy, you wont be able to run as fast or as far, fighting for any length of time will be a dangerous idea. Get to skinny or loosing weight from disease or sickness? You might be faster but health will get lower and resistance will be down.

It appears this game is taking it to the next level. Its not just "I am hungry, eat or I am thirsty, drink" Its I am hungry should I eat fruit, carbs or protein. Do I have enough to have a little bit of it all? Thirsty, do I have CLEAN water?

In theory, this is just an amazing next step in survival games.

Yup, it's a hardcore survival game in lots of ways just with a interesting take on the genre. I'm glad it brings something new to the table. So far I've been really enjoying it and it's just as tense as DayZ when it comes to losing your character and all you've worked for.
