    Re: MMO - General Thread

Crowfall has come out with an official launch date, July 6th. And I think there is some form of an open beta.

I'm forever angry about this game because it was supposed to be the spiritual successor to Shadowbane, but so many design decisions have been peculiar.

Still, might be worth trying out though.

I spent a few hours in the Crowfall beta.

On the plus side I can see combat being very fun and rewarding.

The new player experience was awful though. It was one of the most mind numbing introductory quest lines that I have ever experienced in a MMO.

I was definitely biased going into this, but this does make me feel better about not buying this game.

I re-subbed to Final Fantasy 14. If anyone is playing or wants to get into it let me know. I'm having fun, but it would be nice to have some regulars to play with.

There has been a huge influx of players lately after some recent events, and so it's probably not a bad time to check it out if you were ever interested in it.

I really like the direction of the Lost Ark game.

An mmo with an arpg viewpoint. Every class looks amazing to play. If you haven't checked it out yet, look into Lost Ark. You can play it via VPN before it's supposed to release here in Oct / Nov.

It's a ways out, but my kids and I are watching the development progress of Ashes of Creation and are excited for it.

I love the idea of making it a "living world" with the node system.

I thought the game was centered around PvP? It seems that they've embraced and loved PvP. I thought it was New World that basically hated PvP?

New World has a lot of PvP oriented gameplay. I don't think they hate PvP. No clue about Ashes.

Some of the reviews of New World I watched (I think from Lazy Peon or someone else) said that there was not much in the way of open world PvP and no tension about getting ganked when gathering. I haven't played though, so I am ignorant.

Ashes of Creation is literally built around PvP:
                      1. Everyone is PvP enabled at all times
                      2. You are incentivized to fight back if jumped
                      3. Caravans are PvP quests to bring your goods to major cities
                      4. Node and castle sieges exist and are entirely open-world PvP events with hundreds of participants

You can opt in and out of PvP in New World. You can't do it at anytime, you must be in a sanctuary to do it. You get a ton of XP from PvP fights. There are PvP specific missions as well.

Then of course the big PvP parts are the forts and wars. Wars are 50v50 PvP battles.

As for PvP when running around, I generally leave my PvP toggled on and get into fights regularly.

I think it is a good balance, but maybe it not being PvP 100% of the time puts some off.

From a biased perspective, I would classify it as they are trying to have their cake and eat it too (trying to cater to both "hardcore" & "casual" pvp players). The game has a lot of focus on what should encourage open world pvp, but their systems heavily penalize you for doing it. AoC has the most heavy handed penalty system that I've ever seen for non-consensual PvP (ie: sandbox pvp). Some games try to limit griefing by turning players Red, letting everyone on the map know that they are a PKer and maybe even prevent NPCs from interacting with you. AoC actually debuffs your character, limiting your combat ability, if you fight somebody who you are not at war with.

I come from a background of old school MMO's where player choice, not enforced mechanics, drove in-game behavior though. So, my bias is more disappointment than anything, because the best rush that I've ever had in a video game was knowing that regardless of if I wanted it or not, everytime that I explored the open world that I was at risk of getting jumped by other players.

In a modern context, AoC probably is as close to a PvP MMO that you're going to get with everyone "always flagged" for PvP, and having PvP focused events.

                                Re: MMO - General Thread

I have a really weird relationship with Star Wars the Old Republic.

I preordered this game over 10 years ago, played a bit of the closed beta, bought it on day 1, and I've had an active subscription at multiple times over the 10 years since it launched.

I've never finished any class story though, never seen any expansion content (they are on #6 now), never maxed out a character, and yet I keep coming back to it.

I absolutely love the main story, sidequests and character options. It's always been hard for me to stick with though because I've always found the combat to be dreadful. I don't mind tab targeting, I actually prefer it for MMO's. Something about SWTOR combat just really bores me though.

The reason that I bring this all up is that I have once again found myself playing this game and once again rolling a new character starting from scratch to go through the story. So...if anyone wants to play, let's group up.
