ok guys im sorry if this question has been asked a million times but i nothing about xbox live, i was just wondering if you could use xbox live without a starter kit, just using a free subscrition and one of those wireless adapters that microsoft sells, thanks

Yes, the subscription will work the same way the starter kit does except that it's only good for two months. I'm using one right now. It expires January 5th, so I need to input the code from my starter kit.
