I never liked the games beyond the 2D sprite side-scrollers that were on SEGA Genesis. I never played this game like its time trial format wanted me to, and it seems the new games are really all about that (getting through the level as fast as possible, no time for stopping). Just not my personal flow.
That being said, those Genesis games (mostly 2 & 3) were my childhood. Sonic 3 co-op was amazing, having your friend play as Tails, flying and picking you up, etc. Or using the Sonic & Knuckles adapter and playing as Knuckles either in his own game or with unique level redesigns in Sonic 3... man, they were definitely ahead of their time there. It was like DLC before DLC was a thing.
I have yet to finish Sonic Mania on PS4. There was one level I had trouble beating, and I haven't gone back to it yet.
