I was watching a gameplay video a couple of days ago, and when the phone came out the Contacts app was displayed, and I saw Police. Is it true - can you actually call the cops?

      Re: Saints Row Reboot

I must admit that I was one of the people that bashed this game to high heaven when they first announced the direction they would take with it. I grew up playing the OG Saints Row and loved the fact that GTA had a competitor that chose the gangster theme, but with a somewhat silly aspect to it. That's why I also enjoyed the sequel, Saints Row 2, because it was similar to the first game, but better graphics wise. Once Saints Row the 3rd dropped I decided to step away because they went too far left for me and I stopped paying attention to the series until now.

Back to this release, I decided to get off the "Not My Saints Row" wagon & give this game a try since I'm itching to play more open world story based games. Hopped on New Egg and bought a digital code for the Gold edition. I'm ready to embrace the crazy level of woke-ism the game is about to throw at me. lol

I don't know if that's the definition of woke, I'll have to experience the story to know. Either way, I don't take stories in games seriously, especially in sandbox games. I'm just much more interested in playing rather than investing myself in the story. Mafia games are among the only few I paid attention to the story. I usually just wait for cutscenes to "finish already" or an in-game dialogue to "finish already" as I just want to play. Which is why I hardly ever play linear games anymore.

As far as SR, I'm definitely not a fan of wokenese, but this game allows you for a lot of cosmetic customization, so that's something. I'm happy these guys turn out to be good buddies, friendship outside of the virtual world is welcome (paradoxally I say it about a video game friendship...).
Still think the game can sell well, but we'll see.

It's kind of ridiculous how anything with a non - White cast or White male lead is now labeled as "woke." I get that it deals with issues I can't bring up on OS, but it just is annoying as hell seeing that term co - opted and parroted with everything.

And my comment is a general annoyance (as a man of color) and not meant to attack anyone.

I don't know what it means in this case or not, but when I see these characters I just see a bunch of college-aged Starbucks employees rather than gang members.

I don't care either way, but if that's one of the problems people have then I get it.

If you are a gamer who: Loves the idea of playing video games, gets bored quick, game jumps like no other, will eventually come back to a game just to never finish it but to play it and appreciate it some more, but really wants to finish it...I'm your guy for reviews.

This is spoiler free. I'm around 8 hours in, played a lot last night because Wednesdays are early release at school and I hardly teach on these days, lol. Here we go.

              -----------------

Let's start with the story. It is goofy, it is wanting to be "Woke". Let's get that out of the way and just know what we are getting ourselves into. It is a faux-political, interesting dynamic. The one-liners are catching me off-guard and it's honestly making me "LOL" in real life.

After playing around with the sliders you can make the combat and shooting way more realistic (still looks goofy and extra), which is what I really desired. As soon as I quit comparing this to GTA, the combat system and shooting stopped bothering me completely...which took about two (2) hours.

I'm on the PS5, and honestly there are a lot of NPCs. I'm thinking people who are not getting a lot have a bugged game because I have plenty. I spent a solid hour just roaming and taking time to appreciate the scenery of it all. Watching the NPCs doing their own quirky things is also one of my favorite things to do in these games. Seeing random events popping up, I think there was a pretty big music show going on once. Cops pulling people over. There's a lot going on. Cities are very lively, the desert is less-so...like it should be.

There are a lot of side activities once you get going. New ones open up the more you progress. Patience is key in that department.

Everything I have been doing with the skills and perks within the game are simple, but are nice to have.

I do have a few negatives.

Immersion. Not having that many (or really any) interiors is frustrating to me. I like to go into stores and not do anything but seeing where these people I see wondering the streets "work".

I have come across a few glitches on the PS5, but nothing game breaking.

Combat is good, but aiming is a chore.

Right now I will gladly give Saints Row reboot 7.5/10 with DLC easily making this get a higher score.

If you have any questions/comments please let me know

Can anyone mess with the Vehicle Combat slider and tell me how it effects car combat? It looks like your car can cause too much damage to enemy cars like police SUVs - that are supposed to be more durable than your car, so I would like it toned down. Does the slider help balance this?

First thing that came to mind was college kids that were in over their heads trying to pay off tuition, not leaders of a criminal enterprise.

I guess a problem is that some preferred a SR 1/2 approach because they wanted a GTA-lite game. I didn't mind them taking a more grounded Saint's Row 3 route. From what I seen, I wished the city felt more "alive". I never cared when games went the damage sponge route with enemies, like the old GTA games. Especially, with head shots. But I do think that might have been able to change that in the settings

To be honest, probably might wait a year or so when it ends on PS Plus to play it. I do hope it sells well, but I can also see a situation like Guardians of the Galaxy, where this games goes on sale of 50% off on during the Black Friday sales less than 3 months of launch then ends up on PS Plus or Gamepass less than a year. From what I seen, not bad. But knowing me, it's not something I would buy. But I do hope those who does, enjoys it.

How gangster do you really want a video game to be? The game is fine lol. The developers aren’t going to make a human trafficking simulator or a fentanyl overdose venture. It’s a lighthearted attempt to show the millennial/gen z version of turning to a life of crime after getting screwed over by the system.

I fully expect it from a certain element. Its always the same ones. They cannot help but to interject it (and all their grievance) into everything while simultaneously complaining about others being "triggered" easily.

Right. I mean the same people outraged by this game are the same ones who thought that the gang leader turned President who saved the world from an ailien invasion was fine, but nah the millenials deciding to be their own boss......thats just a bridge too far.

Haters hated it from the first trailers and made up their mind long time ago. It's not about the game's shortcomings, it's about spreading the hate. At this point they are throwing anything at the game. Seen comments about the map being tiny, no city, no traffic, play as a girl-only and so on...Basically anything goes.

I would definitely recommend it. Its no game of the year or anything close but it is a good time. I'd probably grab it on sale at some point. There are other games coming later this year that you could get more bang for your 60$ out of.
