    Black and White 2

I actually love the game, but 17 years later we still don't have Black & White 3. So, it's disappointing that it didn't lead to another sequel.

    Unreal Tournament 4
Or maybe I should list Fortnite instead. Unreal Tournament is my favorite FPS series ever. I love the arena style combat, and I played the ever living crap out of Unreal Championship on the original Xbox. Unreal Tournament 4 was never completed though because EPIC games also created Fortnite at the same time as UT4 development was going. Fortnite's insane success pulled all resources from UT4's development until finally it was no longer supported. The pre-alpha version of the game has been available to download for years, I still mess around on it at times, but it's unfinished with very few players playing.

The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword HD - The camera in this game is horrible. You'll often wind up out of position to see what you need to be doing, and you're not presented with an intuitive way of controlling the camera. The controls were also a let down; give me an actual button to press for the sword instead of using the thumbsick. Also, the visuals remain underwhelming. I expected more upgrades here. Oh, and I found the story really weak. A big letdown for me after spending close to 200 hours with BOTW and really enjoying the Link's Awakening remake.

I'll echo the sports genre thoughts already posted. It is hard to reconcile where we are now when looking back at the PS2/Xbox/GC era. The future for these games seemed so bright and full of possibilities, and yet here we are with no consumer choice for any sport; you get one game and that's it. And, the game you get is heavily geared towards modes you don't play and crowds you don't belong to. I try and make the best of it, but really MLB The Show is the only sports game that still holds my attention longer than a month, and still they almost lost me with how disappointing 21 was.
      Currently Playing:
      MLB The Show 25 (PS5)

The story for RDR2 will always be disappointment for me.

I suppose it was doomed to some extent beacuse it was a prequel. But it went off the rails WAY too early. Totally predictable and unimaginative.

.. but still a distant 102nd to Madden. With the NFL being the undisputed king of entertainment, I can't believe that is the football game we are stuck with.

Metal Gear Solid V, Phantom Pain.

Gameplay was fun, world was immersive, story was pretty engaging, graphics are still mesmerizing. All Konami had to do was let Hideo Kojima do his thing....he proved himself 4 times before with the MGS series, leave him alone. We can see bits and pieces of the final story arc and gosh, it would've been absolutely epic.

All DICE had to do was take BFV, improve a few mechanics, repurpose it with current maps and guns and this game would've been amazing.

              Shame, really.

Crowfall - The MMO that could have been.

Honestly, this probably should have been the game that I started this thread with. Crowfall was originally marketed as a spiritual successor to Shadowbane (my fondest video game ever, a game that I began playing in 2004 and have been itching to get the same experience from a MMO ever since). When Crowfall was first announced, myself and many other former Shadowbane players were super excited because it was coming from one of the original Shadowbane creators, and there were some early Easter Eggs and direct references to how SB was played. Within a few short months though, that excitement was gone. The game still marketed itself as and played into the history of Shadowbane, but it seemed like every new announcement provided further proof that this was not the game that former SB players wanted.

To make this story much shorter. That original announcement was in January 2015. Despite being severely turned off by several developer announcements, I continued to follow the game's development until it finally hit open beta in 2021. I tried out the beta just prior to release in the summer, and the game was just bad. The small bit of hope that I held onto that this game would give the same excitement as SB evaporated within my first hour playing.

I ended up playing Crowfall for not much longer than it took me to read your post.

Shoutout to BFV for turning it around and becoming a pretty damn good Battlefield game btw. I preferred it to One and I thought BF1 was incredible

Its a great game. Everything was an improvement over the original, I just thought the story stunk.

RDR 2 I wish u would do more mission with the hole gang. That u had to brush the horse, and taking bath with Arthur. Imagine u have to go for oil changes in GTA 5.

Far cry 6 story was boring. I don't understand Ubisoft for giving the non host no progress.

Don't play a huge variety of games, but I echo some of the sentiments about sports games in general. They've become too much about their collection-based and other gimmick modes while mostly ignoring what the game is supposed to be about at it's core, that is taking control of your favorite team in whate er league/sport and guiding them through a season/franchise to win the championship.

As for individual games, Fuel (I had it for PS3 but was also on XBox and PC). The game was touted as having a huge open world and a variety of racing disciplines, but the environment wasn't particularly interesting and there wasn't really any replay value once you completed the career races. Add on top of that the complete lack of support for the game after it was released. I actually can't help thinking about Fuel every time I play The Crew 2 because to me the latter is basically everything the former could've been and then some. The only thing TC2 doesn't have that Fuel had is ATVs/Quadbikes

Shoot, when you said Fuel I was first thinking of Pure. I was thinking: "Man, that's a game that I did not give enough time for." That was incredibly fun.

I think I played a demo of Fuel, but perhaps that's it. The four-letter named racing game that I had a blast with but only played the online demo of over and over was Blur.

                              Re: Most Disappointing games

I had been thinking about this topic lately and had a few more to add.

I wasn't going to do it originally, but I'll echo many thoughts on sports games. The entire sports video game market is just a big pile of disappointment. It has been years since I have held expectations for any sports game aside from maybe the OOTP series, so I can't say that the individual games fail to meet expectations, because there aren't any. I am just disappointed that I no longer can enjoy those games. I'm not going into specifics that are well covered in other places about what is wrong with the state of the genre, but I went from being someone who literally bought 3, 4, even 5 sports games every single year for well over a decade to....including OOTP which I've purchased 4 straight years, I have 7 sports game purchases in the last 5 years. I'm no longer part of the target audience for a genre that I grew up loving and that is disappointing.

Yes Your Grace (PC) - I have a stupid amount of games on Steam. I have them all neatly categorized by genre, and I have one folder that is simply called "Trash" that has 3 games in it that I would probably delete from my library if I could because there is absolutely no way I will ever play any of them again. Cyberpunk 2077, another game that just simply is broken and doesn't work, and this one. It's a game with multiple endings, and I did work my way through 1 of the endings over the course of about 8 hours. It's one of those games where you keep clicking next turn...waiting for something to happen that never does. I can't express enough how much I hated the 8 hours that I wasted in this game despite the really cool concept of being a King making decisions for the town, an advertised management sim game that gave you very little to manage.

                              Duke Nukem Forever
The game that should have remained a meme. I loved the old Duke Nukem games. They were funny, and gameplay was fun for the era. DN:F was such a major let down. It probably shouldn't have been surprising after being delayed 14 years, but I always held out hope that it would be fun. It wasn't.

                              Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask
I don't know exactly why I didn't like this game, but it just never did anything for me. I loved Ocarina of Time, and I still own the holographic version of this game. Something about it just never struck with me.

The original Final Fantasy VII. It was so hyped up but I never really connected with the game. My favorite has always been IX.
