Re: Assassin's Creed Shadows: AC Japan

I'm only level 10, but so far there is already so much I love and hate about the game.

    Love:
    - Such a beautiful game!
    - Stealth elements (I'm a big stealth guy..love Metal Gear)
    - Having fun exploring and climbing viewpoints
    - Assassinations (I have Guaranteed Assassination turned on)
    - Parkour with Noeh

    Hate:
    - NPC AI is ridiculously dumb
    - Whistling is OP
    - Combat is so clunky
    - I keep getting stuck on parts of the map
    - Already seems like a repetitive AC game that I'll play for a while, but won't finish (Ala Valhalla)

I’m only level 7 and I like it so far. I hope there are cooler special combat moves later on. I like the parry and dodge system. The world is big and yet also constrained because you can’t really go off roading or the vegetation becomes a mess on your screen. Combat is definitely more difficult in that Naoe cannot take a lot of punishment. Can’t charge in guns a blazing.

The story is solid although I’m not crazy about the meditation points to tell the back story through flashbacks. There are 22 of them!

I'm level 22 or 23. I love the winter snow areas of the map. See your foot prints in the snow, run on the roof and you can hear the ice crunching and falling off. Combat moves get better how ever you have to level up your knowledge level quite a bit because all of those combat abilities are locked behind knowledge levels. So therefore you have to go around gathering knowledge points, big grind really.

Yasuke is a tank. However he is slower and not agile at all. So if you find yourself in a group situation, it can be an issue. Do love running through doors and stuff with him. Naoe quicker, super agile, better sneaker, etc., with the cost of not being able to handle a lot of hits.

All in all, there is no shortage of groups of enemies to take out in this game. Think you have it all figured out and boom, a new thing pops up and another one and another one. Game is definitely on the list for me for Game of The Year.

I laughed when I was trying to jump pole to pole with Yasuke. His big butt made it most of the way, but the last pole was a tad bit too far for him to reach. Went sliding down the hill. Switched to Naoe and made it across with ease. So yeah anything climbing or leaping involved, Naoe is the one to use.

30 hours in and about to call it the night. Oh yeah made it to level 3 with the knowledge too. Didn't care for Naoe history, but Yasuke history be shorter and more straight forward. Did have 1 glitch when my character got stuck in the boat. Like half of the body was below the boat, other half on top of the boat. Couldn't move at all, had to load one of the saves.

I don't have the game yet, but I did read that in order to make the AI a bit smarter is move stealth up the expert setting, this will be the first thing I do when I pick the game up.

4 levels of difficulty, 4 levels of stealth, 3 levels of combat style, what language you want the game to be in, 3 levels of aim assist, mini game input choices, assassination choices, loot choices, dialogue choices where you can have full or just storyline specific. I dare say this is the most customizable Assassins Creed game that was ever made.

56 hours in and I'm only a level 34. Have a long way to go considering some of these people I need to go after are level 49. Definitely Gamer of The Year worthy. Also definitely the best Assassins Creed in the entire series, yes even better than Black Flag. Unlike other games in the series, this game slow rolls out the plot. You think you have it figured out and who is who and than a few hours later, you find out you were wrong.

                    For example.

                    Spoiler

Also love the fact there are a wide variety of weapons Yasuke and Naoe can use. They really do have something for every play style you can imagine.

I'm going to be picking up the game here real soon (can't wait) but in reading up some of the options in game, the one I am conflicted on is the enemy scaling, I have read both sides for going either way, but I think the deciding factor for me and why I may just keep it off, is that with enemy scaling turned on, you never get the feeling of being a badass, does this sound correct?

Also debating on turning on guaranteed assassinations, although I'm thinking about just leaving this off, especially if I don't enable enemy scaling as I really wouldn't need guaranteed assassinations

Oh hell, now I'm confused...lol just did a quick search and it doesn't sound like enemy scaling can be turned off?

You will feel like a badass regardless as long as you keep your weapons, armor and skills leveled up. Keeping your stuff leveled up is the key. The more knowledge points you get, the more abilities you can unlock. Good thing about this game and its skill trees is that you can reset them for FREE. So lets say in the beginning you want to specialize with one style of weapon, but later on get bored with it, you can reset your skill trees, and specialize in a different kind of weapon.

You can do this as many times as you like, for FREE. IMO auto assassin just make the game too easy because it won't separate the threat of regular guys, elites, samurai and guardians, etc. But hey if people want to play that way, they can, the option is there.

This right here in bold is why I decided to leave it turned off, I want the assassinations to be based more on keeping my weapons on par and leveled up, it makes picking what you want/need to upgrade that much more important..IMO

You aren't killing anybody 10 levels above you. 1 hit and you are DEAD. Now if you are the same level and auto assassinate is turned off, you can kill regular people from behind, above, even from the front if they don't fully recognize who you are. Elites, ronin, etc. people more than just a regular dude, they will catch your blade hand and a fight breaks out.

I like it that way because it adds some realism to it. In real life you were an average dude fighting a 6'6 300 pound dude, the chances of you doing a 1 hitter quitter against him is pretty damn low. It is going to be a brawl and if he connects, you are going to feel it. This game represents that with auto turned off. You will learn pretty fast to not let elites hit you too many times, they do some serious damage.

I’ve played almost 20 hours, am level 14 with Noue and have yet to unlock the brute lol. I don’t have auto assassinate on. Early on in the game I was dying quite a bit since you only have one weapon type, crappy armour and no special abilities.

I have all 3 weapons for her now and I love the short blades/teppo(?). The Katana is a bit boring. The swinging chain thing is cool but I don’t have any special abilities for that weapon. With the small blades I have a double assassination move unlocked, plus two special fighting moves which include an over powered auto block for 7 seconds. That allows you to be a badass in a crowd because with her your normal combat early on is largely stealth or 1v1. If you take on 3+ enemies early on you are dead. Some bonus abilities like getting an extra shurikin/stars after an assassination are nice. Lots of ways to build up your character in specific ways.

The auto scaling is fine as once you get more powerful the average bad guy is toast. Elites can be hard and you can’t assassinate them although maybe if I level up that skill tree more. And I would never want to take on an enemy more than maybe 1-2 above me. Anyone 5+ levels above me is gonna smoke me.

The story is good, I’ve settled into a groove and tons of places to go and things to do. I’ve been looking forward to an open world game where I can relax, pick up and play when I want and enjoy. This game doesn’t do anything revolutionary and that’s fine. It’s fun.
