Civilization VII (PC, PS5, PS4, XBOX Series, XB1, Switch)

    Coming in 2025

This announcement broke a few hearts in another part of the forum today, but I'm very much looking forward to it. The DLC structure (which I'm sure will be similar) is usually my only major issue, but the base game and expansions are an every iteration purchase for me as I put hundreds of hours into each one.

    Gameplay reveal in August.

I don't know...switching Civ's through 3 different "ages"? Isn't the whole attraction of Civilization to shepherd one civilization from the dawn of time through to the modern era? I'll still play the game (eventually...like 2 years after it's released), but I'm skeptical of this change.

I'm interested to see more about the ages.

On the surface I agree that I don't want to just start over, but if it truly works out as some kind of layered civilization then I think that could be kind of cool. As long as you are keeping your empire from the last age and it just becomes a transition of attributes then I think that could be interesting. It keeps things kind of balanced across the landscape so that you don't end up with 20th century tanks going up against Roman legionnaires (though I will miss doing that).

Bringing in different leaders could also be cool. Sounds like your leader stays consistent throughout all the ages, but you get a wider selection of leaders to choose from. Not sure that I like that your leader can be anyone though. Some of the stuff with Ages makes it feel like a more historical sim which I think is cool, but then taking Genghis Khan as your faction leader playing as America kind of suspends that realism.

It just seems weird/unnecessary to me that you could start the game as Egypt, keep your same leader, and then at the end of the 'age', you are now in charge of Mongolia? It seems like a change for change's sake, not one that is borne of any kind of necessity (or even common sense). I could understand if, for example, you start as Rome, it becomes Byzantium in the next age, and then it transitions to the Ottoman Empire in the next age (or modern Italy, whatever). That would be kinda cool.

But Egypt --> China --> America? Why?

Also, I will dearly miss "spearman defeats tank", although I guess that hasn't been in the game in years...

Re: Civilization VII (PC, PS5, PS4, XBOX Series, XB1, Switch)

First reviews are starting to come out. I think probably on-par with what most expected for version 1.0 of the game (IGN's is here: https://www.ign.com/articles/civilization-7-review).

I probably won't get this game until years after it releases, but I'll be interested to follow along with how it goes. I like the idea of simplifying streamlining some things, as I have never cared for the super-micro stuff like assigning citizens to specific plots of land or specific jobs/tasks (that just seems to micromanaging to me), and I've always cared more for the macro-decision making, so it will be interesting to see what they've streamlined and simplified.

One trend that remains troubling to me (which spans games/genres) which apparently exists in Civ7 as well is the lack of instructional material that games come with now. There is basically zero, and given how complex and how many different mechanisms there are in games now, I don't understand how they release games without an instruction manual or credible explanation somewhere of how their games work. I had this issue with "College Football 25", which has myriad functions/features/controls that are never explained anywhere and most people don't know exist.

I understand that it's a ruthless mindset of cutting costs at all available areas, and they can claim that the instruction manuals are outsourced to the community, but I find it to be malpractice to release a game of any complexity and not include - somewhere - adequate directions on how to play the game and what the various mechanisms in the game are (and how they work).

Picked this up. Was going to wait but watched Potatoe McWiskey playing and it got me getting the itch. These guys really sell the game. It’s no wonder they get free copies.

Anyway, really enjoying it so far. I am liking the changes. Really makes it feel different than previous versions but not so much that it’s not Civ.

I could have waited [emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]] months or so but I haven’t paid full price for a game in a long time. Happy with my purchase.

Awesome - hope you are enjoying it. Will be interested to see how the game evolves over time, but any thoughts you have after you spend some time with it would be good to hear.

Personally I played [emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]] so much that after playing this I don’t want to back.

This is usually what has happened. After [emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]] I couldn’t play [emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]. After [emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] no [emoji640].

I am really enjoying it. Definitely needs more info though as to why things are happening. It’s not always clear.

But for me I’d rather play [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji639]]. I’ve only played first [emoji638] ages so far though.

As of now beginning game is still more fun to me then second age.
