Re: Got about $3000 to spend on new computer, suggestions?

Is this computer mostly going to be for gaming or for work?

If the former, it seems like overkill. Xbox2 comes out later this year and will have a GPU beyond that $400 video card.

PS3 comes out next year, again with a next generation GPU.

So for gaming, the time to lay out big bucks for a PC is about 18-24 months from now, when that investment will be more likely to outperform consoles which will cost less than that $400 video card.

So if gaming isn't a big part of the equation, then no need for a $3000 PC anyways.

Get a phat laptop. Alienware, Voodoo PC and the rest make laptops too.

Its for gaming and the PS3 and XBox2 are irrelevant because there are alot of PC games I want to play that aren't on them. Not to mention I like the fact alot of the games I'm looking at getting on the PC are in the $19 - $29 range, not the $49 - $59 range. So when my contract ends and if I don't get a perm job here in Richmond I can still afford to do some gaming by picking up great titles in the PC library that are cheap simply because they are older.

In my opinion the consoles have always done better for sports and action games but the PC has always ruled when it comes to MMORPG, RPG and FPS. Unless the next gen of consoles has more open source type mod'able software and keyboard and mouse capable in ALL games that is never going to change. There's more to games than just eye candy and control input and user modability is a huge aspect of the PC community that consoles are still worlds behind in.

PS I am gonna get a laptop but not one for gaming, more one just to have the internet on the go. I'm looking to keep that in the $700-$800 range.
