    Touch screen Controllers

According to GameInformer, Nintendo is secretly working on a true "revolution" for gaming by developing a touch screen controller.

The way it works, there will be no actual buttons assigned on the controller. Instead, you'll have a touch screen mapped over a controller allowing developers to assign/place their own buttons on the controller.

So, if for example you are playing a game that would require 13 buttons, a developer can map out that control scheme for the Revolution. If the game only requires two buttons then your touch screen will only have two button assignments mapped out on it.

Personally, I think this is the next revolution in gaming. While I still feel that this will be Nintendo's last gaming console, I think that Nintendo is amazing when it comes to innovation. They did it with the DS and now it seems as if they are taking the huge leap with the Revolution.

I'm not even going to ask whether or not people think this will work. I feel that it will. In my opinion, the next round (the round after PS3 and XBOX 2) of gaming systems will all feature touch screen controllers (if and only if Nintendo does indeed do it with the Revolution).

Imagine playing a basketball video game and instead of being told to press O to shoot the ball, the controller detailing that a button press in a particular direction of the controller will shoot the ball. No need for letters or shapes to assing buttons, but we'd have detailed information that fits the game we are playing.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

If this is the "revolution" they were talking about then I am dissapointed and will quote John Lennon-"You know you can count me out"

Can you explain why you are disappointed?

It's definitely an idea that no one has attempted before and it could completely impact the amount of flexibility a developer has with a game. Instead of being forced to stick with a set number of buttons, you're allowing more PC-like options - which is always good.

            Re: Touch screen Controllers

Man, I like Nintendo, and I love innovation, but that said.......I don't like this idea.

One of the main reasons that game controllers are intuitive is the notion of tactile feedback. We don't need to look at our controllers after a while because we know where the buttons are, and we can feel when they are pushed. A touch-screen cant replicate this. In the heat of a tense gaming moment, I dont see how a gamer wont "lose" his/her place on the controller. And what about games that require fast/hard tapping of a button? Seems like all touchscreens are much too fragile for this, not to mention the banging/throwing of controllers many gamers engage in.

I liked the rumor of gyroscopes in the controllers much better.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.

It somewhere in this thread, where people discuss Revolution rumors.

A gyroscope would enable the controller to know when/how it is being tilted, allowing for an extra degree of control. Say, for steering, or leaning in a motorcycle game.

Wow, wow....wow! My how the mighty have fallen. I'm a huge Nintendo supporter but this is stupid IMO. How about they just continue to make the best games in the business? Make a console that looks like an expensive piece of equipment and not a stupid tellytubbie purse. Make a controller that works for all game(SPORTS!) and not just one that works great for the latest Mario game. And then realize online gaming is not only the future but the present as well. Can I be the only stinking person on the earth who would LOVE to play Advance Wars, Mario Kart, F-Zero, Smash Bros, Mario Party, Mario Golf/Tennis, Excitebike, Wave Race and even god forbid Pokemon online???

I thought the Gamecube would be Nintendo's chance to prove they learn from their mistakes. Now I realize they dont even know they've made any mistakes.

Its a great idea, but i dont know if can work with the abuse controllers take. Maybe if they put a small touch screen on the controller and buttons around it, much like the DS. Also it reminds me of the old intelivison in which you would slide in a different controller sleve for each game.
