this also reminded me of the Intellivision slide in card for the controllers! Ahhh, memories...

I agree with everyone though, I think losing buttons for a touch screen would be a bad idea, though I will reserve judgement until I actually see/try it out.

Gyroscopes would be amazing, that would add another immersive element to a game.

        Re: Touch screen Controllers

What is the need of removing buttons from controllers? And what advantage is gained by replacing them with a touch screen? Has anyone every played a game and said, "Man, its so much work to press buttons, I'd much rather be able to just touch them instead of actually pressing down."

True innovation is good and welcomed, innovation for the sake of innovation is just a gimmick, and thats what the DS has been so far and thats what this new controller sounds like. Button layout won't be a problem if Nintendo actually makes a good controller, which they have failed to do with their previous two consoles. The analog stick on the N64 controller was their last good idea. The Gamecube controller is good, but sucks for sports gaming and has several design quirks that will make you scratch your head.

If the Revolution (or whatever they eventually decide to call it) has a touch screen controller with no face buttons I won't buy it.

One of the main reasons that game controllers are intuitive is the notion of tactile feedback. We don't need to look at our controllers after a while because we know where the buttons are, and we can feel when they are pushed. A touch-screen cant replicate this. In the heat of a tense gaming moment, I dont see how a gamer wont "lose" his/her place on the controller. And what about games that require fast/hard tapping of a button? Seems like all touchscreens are much too fragile for this, not to mention the banging/throwing of controllers many gamers engage in.

I liked the rumor of gyroscopes in the controllers much better.
GREAT points. If your controller changed with every game you plugged into the system, you would never be able to simply plug-and-play. You would have to look down to (1) figure out what the new layout was or (2) make sure your thumb wasn't half an inch to the right/left and pushing another button. The design may be better impemented than my suppositions, but I am picturing my PocketPC phone and touch screen multimedia remote. There is no way I could use either of those w/o looking at the screen. On the other hand, I could my old cell phone and remote controls with my eyes closed. Difference is, I can't think of a time where I would have to use lightening fast reflexes to use either of those.

            Just some thoughts...

                Re: Touch screen Controllers

thinking about it more, touch screens would be a loss of control on our part, because we lose the pressure sensitive buttons, being able to jam a button down or just feather tap it. Most touch screens I know don't test pressure like that, or if they do they'd have to be way too expensive for a controller.

You guys brought up great points.

I, personally, still feel that touch screen controllers is the next jump in controllers (after wireless - which should be the norm for next-gen systems).

I do, however, agree that if it were to be done there will need to be a lot of advances in touch screen technology. I also agree that having to learn every single button layout for individual games could be taxing - though, I feel as if we learn that everytime we try a new console and it really doesn't take long to learn the layout.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace
