You mean you don't know how to do a complete shutdown, or you don't know how to turn it back on again?

Sleep Mode: Slide the power switch up and release, to "awaken" slide it again.

Full Shut-Off: Slide the power switch up and hold in the up position for 2 seconds or more, to power on, just slide the switch up.

Is it okay to have it in sleep mode for an extended amount of time or should I turn it off?

In sleep, it does use power .... but not much.

If you want to save the batter, and really won't be playing, then probably turning it OFF is best. Otherwise, sleep should harm the system, just drain the battery a bit.

I don't own a PSP, but I would guess its wise to use sleep mode if you are going to be playing again soon when you go to turn it off. It probably uses up more power to turn the system on than to sustain it in a hybernated state. Though I'm sure after a certain period of time, sleep mode consumes more power than it would have to just power up the system.

It would probably just be wise to go into sleep mode if you are going to be playing again in an hour or so. If you won't be playing for over an hour then its probably best to just shut down completely.
