More Japanese game giants choosing next-gen Xbox?

Early convert Yoshiki Okamoto hints that other high-profile game designers in Japan are developing games for Microsoft's forthcoming console.

TOKYO--In a recent interview on the official Xbox Web site in Japan, Game Republic's Yoshiki Okamoto revealed that other big-name game developers may soon join the growing crowd of next-generation Xbox supporters. He also added that, when announced, the lineup of launch titles for the console may shock the game industry.

"[Final Fantasy creator Hironobu] Sakaguchi-san, [Space Channel 5 creator Tetsuya] Mizuguchi-san, and myself have been the focus of attention so far. But I've been hearing that some other designers will also be joining [in making games for the next Xbox]. There are a lot of surprises. I find myself saying: 'What, this development studio!? This game!? These people!?'."

"If the current line-up [of games] in development for the next-generation Xbox was revealed," Okamoto said in the interview, "it would not only surprise users, but the entire industry. There probably wouldn't be anyone [in Japan] that would still be uninterested in buying the next-generation Xbox when they see the line-up." He called the still-under-wraps list "a powerful fleet of Japanese designers."

Okamoto revealed that he is currently making a number of games for the next Xbox, all in genres that are new to him. He added the games are already in playable form.

When asked if there was a negative side to working with Microsoft Game Studios, Okamoto commented, "We can't port the games to other hardware even if it seems possible, so that's a disappointment. But even with that downside to income, Xbox has specs that make us want to develop for it." Then, as a final tease, Okamoto said, "I can't reveal the specifics, but one of the games we're making will really go to the extreme."

...good news, and can't wait to see the launch line-up.

I get the feeling that at the end of the day most of us here will end up having both the next-box and the ps3 regardless of whether they fit into our budgets are not. The games will eventually suck us all in.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

I'm sure a lot of people will get both. But with increasing game prices(possibly) and increased system price I know I won't be the only person who will only get one system or the other, definitely not both. If I have been able to live without GTA and GT for all these years, I can live without the small handful of exclusives I will be missing out on in the next gen systems.

No PS3 for me. The games do add a "draw" factor to a console but I would never buy a console just because of a game or two that are exclusive to it. The next Xbox will be enough out of the pocket as it is.

Lets see who they are. It can't be an sidegame BS like FF crystal chronicles(the games by the FF person sound american...an mmorpg??) or 1 or 2 games at launch(JSRF and Otogi didn't help xbox in japan)...it has to be comparable to what the PS2 currently has...or simply put it's not going to mean a thing in Japan. It's already known they aren't going to give a damn about XBL/custom soundtracks/hdtv standardization. Then you have games like FF12 and Kingdom Hearts 2 to consider as well. And the fact the people in japan may just refuse to buy an american product. MS made a big mistake in not considering Japan at ALL when designing xbox 1, now it might be too late to recover no matter what games they might secure.

Yea, I'll be just fine with an XBox II this winter, instead of waiting till spring/summer of next year for a PSIII.

XBox II all the way for me, and articles like that just pump me up more.

Did you read the article? It is not too late, that is for sure.

Online sports gaming for now will drive my purchasing a next gen system. However that could change or be seriously affected by exclusive licenses - if certain exclusive licenses take away particular sports series then I may be forced to consider exclusive non sports titles in how I choose a system.

Agreed. I don't like exclusive sports' titles. Near an oxymoron just about. Still, I'm glad that basketball is expanding. Oh, that new game Playmakers seems like one of the best ideas to hit the football field. I'm glad for that. If it's hot, then I'd definitely keep an eye out for it. Depth is what I'm looking for in my sports. Gameplay and depth. I really can't wait to see how upgraded the graphics from 2K will be. Also, can't wait to see what other gimmicks EA has up its sleeves. I can see football dying out quick within about 2 years. Still, I'm crossing my fingers.

it's a very long process though unless the launch has like 2-3 killer apps that directly appeal to the japs. Besides the lack of japanese games and big size, people didn't even bother look ing at an american product over there. That's the biggest hurdle MS has to get over.
