    Godfather Game gets Thumbs Down

Francis Ford Coppola, director of the original Godfather films, says he never gave permission for a video game to be made from the property, according to a story in the New York Post.

Electronic Arts recently announced it is creating a game based on the classic films, which will use many of the same settings and characters -- including the likeness and voice of Marlon Brando as the Don himself.

According to the Post article, Coppola expresses his disdain on this Sunday's edition of "Sunday Morning ShootOut" on AMC.

"I knew nothing about it. They never asked me if I thought it was a good idea," the article quotes Coppola as saying. "I went and I took a look at what it was ... What they do is they use the characaters everyone knows and they hire those actors to be there and only to introduce very minor characters. And then for the next hour they shoot and kill each other."

EA's game, which features open-ended gameplay almost certainly inspired by the brutal Grand Theft Auto series, marks the publishing giant's foray into Mature-rated titles. Apparently the game is already too violent for the original film's director.

"I had absolutely nothing to do with the game and I disapprove," Coppola says. "I think it's a misuse of film."

Electronic Arts obtained the video game rights to The Godfather from Paramount, which owns the rights to the film property.

Damnit people, if EA ruins this game I'm gonna be really pissed off. I'm a huge fan of the Godfather trilogy - I've got the DVD films (of course), the script to the film, and the original first publishing of the novel signed by Mario Puzo, and I'll throw a nerdy rage if this thing sucks. The game looks sick, but we'll just have to see if it actually plays as good as it looks.

Ever play Mafia? That game was simply amazing. At least it was on the PC. It was linear, but man, it blew GTA away. I loved the atmosphere in the game, the action, just everything about it.

To me, the Godfather game looks a lot like Mafia, and if the game is half as good as Mafia, it should be a treat.

Who owns the rights to the Godfather trilogy anyway? Surely, the company that's making the game must have gone through the proper channels to get the game made. If not, it's going to be a big problem getting the game to the market, IMHO.

They got the rights from the studio, they don't have to get any permission from the director or anyone else.

Disgusting. I'm against them even attempting to make a game off these films.

What's next? A Citizen Kane game, a Wild Bunch game, a Psycho game, a Seven Samurai game, a 2001:A Space Odyssey game? Why can't game makers come up with their own damn ideas!!?!?!?!?!

The only possible exception I'll allow for movies into games are properties like Batman/Spiderman/Superman or Fantasy Action Adventure(Think Starwars), since those characters lend themselves to a game environment. But a classic DRAMA like Godfather, or a film like Fight Club? Come on. And its only made worse by thE fact that these games are almost universally horrendous.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

Oversimplification is the escape of men who want to avoid the duty demanded by true understanding.

          You're overreacting, IMHO.

I think the Godfather has a lot of potential as a videogame. Have you EVER played Mafia? That game shows how to fuse videogames and cinematic storytelling together. The game was epic in scope, and I hear there's a sequel coming out for that, which I personally can't wait for.

While I agree that I do not want to see the game follow the storyline too closely of the Godfather trilogy (actually, I'd rather see a different story told, or something that's very LOOSELY based on the Godfather trilogy), I can easily see the Godfather being a great game. If done right, and that's rare. But if the developers are taking notes on how it should be done through the likes of Mafia and GTA (sounds like a blend of the two games), it just might work.
