    Intervention: Video game addict?

Does anyone watch the show Intervention on A&E? This week there was a guy whose addicition was video games. He reportedly played them about 8 to 10 hours a day with some days being 17 to 24 hour sessions of gaming. So he had an intervention from his family who say his life was slipping away since he dropped outta school and all.

My main issue about the show was, besides the fascination of how widespread is this addiction, do you guys think that it is fair to treat this addiction as any other meaning that he has to give up videogames entirely or risk going back to his addictive behavior? Is it fair to ask this of anyone as the entire videogame phenomena has become as basic as watching tv or going to the movies etc etc.

Now I can understand maybe cocaine addicts being focused on never doing "just a little cocaine" because of the nature of it but don't you guys think this is a socially acceptable and non-harmative behaviour if done in a reasonable nature, like many of us here do? I mean to tell someone that they need to change is one thing, cutting down the videogaming to like an hour or so or whatever is reasonable, but to say a person has to eliminate the hobby entirely is just a bit much.

I guess maybe because this is an addiction I can really relate to, although my hobby consists of about 10 hours a week, hardly harmful, that I see it differently but I don't really agree that this particular addiction would need to be treated the same way that say a heroin addiction or food disorder would need to be treated.

What do you guys think? What would you do if your family had an intervention with you and demanded you get help, go into rehab for 42 days and never play videogames again and if you didn't they would completely disown you? Cut you off completely in every way if you didn't agree because they felt you were ruining your life with Halo 2 marathon sessions or whatnot. Thoughts?

Yeah and i can't even imagine 24 hours of gaming straight. I've never played a game that long in my life and i've been gaming for 27 years. I think the longest I've probably played is about 10-12 hours straight. After that my neck crinks up, my knees hurt and my eyes lose focus. 24 hours straight would leave me immobilized for about 2 days I think, LOL!

Interesting... I was watching a Law & Order episode yesterday about a murder influenced by video games. Any chance they'll replay this intervention show?

And I cannot play a video game for 5-6 hours a day. I will play for 3-4 hours on the weekend, but that's not in a row. I find it amazing how people can sit still playing a video game for 10+ hours. That's just CRAZY!

Well I don't see a replay but maybe once it goes into reruns. It's on A&E at 10pm est on Sundays. It's a very interesting program if you ain't seen it you should check it out. It will make you appreciate your life very much, unless you're a rampant addict like alot of these people of course, lol.

As for gameplay i'm the same way, I usually play for 1 hour or maybe 2 during week, if at all. Then on weekends I'll go for about 3 or 4 either Friday or Saturday night and that's about it for me.

I hear what you're saying here bro but like anything eles in life its what you make of it but then theres the other end the extremes and it sounds like this guys pretty much stretch it as far as one should go...someone should have said something long before it reach this point he's at now.

And with this form of entertainment being accepted as the choice of most all media entertainment I'd say it be pretty hard to hold out from not playing ever again because this is how the world has evolved and video games are now the norm within certain guildlines and still come under fire and are blamed for a lot of disfuctional behavior in children as well as adults and we hear and read about it everyday to the point where they're being discussed in Congressional hearings with no clear proof positive presented by both sides of the issue.

But clearly if its effecting his life in such an adverse way he's got issues and I'm not sure if at all he'll find a remedy to his addiction because he's been at it for so long you'd have to really get into this guys head to figure him out and I see no clear solution as you've described to help him but going cold turkey might do more harm then good.

Even some Med students use video games as a way to aid and improve certain skills as required in the medical field and they have to because of the technology behind them this is the price we pay as a society of advancing people ranging from micro surgery to stem cell research.

And theres more, even our armed services train and use this technology actually they have been for some time now we're just getting our hands on whats been out there for years. Remember Area 51 and project Bluebook denied for years...you know the rest don't you?

I saw it yesterday. That guy was weird at the beginning but at the end he was starting to look normal. At the beginning he just stared at the screen and didn't change his expression or talk at all.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

Yeah he had some really wild, staring eyes. He was kinda homicidal looking IMO.

lol,In my collegiate days, we would play all the time, but there was a rotation. We would get super tecmo bowl, every one take a team and run a season in a week. That was as extreme as it got for me. Now married with kids, I'm lucky to get a game in some days. I recently dropped out of a bunch of leagues, because of time constraints, but abscence makes the heart grow fonder, because I seem to enjoy the games more in the limited amount of time I play.
