Anyone else upset about Xbox 360 having a DVD only drive?
I brought this up months ago when it was speculated that Xbox 360 was going to have a HD-DVD drive I said they couldnt possibly have the console release till late next year if they have gone that route due to the issues of macrovision and copy protection arguments since HD-DVD didnt want to make the mistake DVD did with the CSS encryption being cracked they are still debating which encryption method to go with so Microsoft couldnt possibly have the drive in their sytem this year. We all know Sony is going to use Blue Ray 60 gigabyte or more disks, while the Xbox is still stuck in the stone age with a plain ole DVD which means having a HDTV to play games only (no hd movies sorry fellas) on standard DVD and bring limited to a mere 9 GIGs at the most. Perhaps this is what puts Sony and Nintendo ahead of the game us older gamers know that Nintendo made a huge mistake with the Nintendo 64 using cartridges while Sony went with CD-Rom. Us older gamers know that Space is a neccesity for good games and now that Microsoft is bragging about ultilizing HDTV technology for all their games concerns me quite a bit when they are using a mere 9 gig regular disks. Uh hello Microsoft where are you gonna get all this space from??? plain ole DVD is not enough and wont cut it. This is Deja Vu all over again and a mirror image of what happened to Nintendo when they decided to stick with the cartridges for there newer console while sony going with CD-Rom, space is definetly going to be a key issue with this console in a year or so perhaps Microsoft should have been smart and waited like Sony chose to. Only time will tell but I think its a huge mistake to go with DVD Rom again 52 gigabytes is a big difference in console storage.Last edited by funkydelic; 05-13-2005, 02:37 PM.Born and Raised in the 206 [Central District] Sea-Town Funk

Well there's a problem. Blu-ray and HD-DVD may merge, and develope a unified format. No way can Microsoft wait, until that is resolved, since they're launching this year.

If you said No or I could care less obviously you may be casual gamer or not a hardcore gamer but us hardcore gamers know space really does matter just ask Nintendo about that one when developers didnt want to develop for them cause there wasnt enough space for the really good games at that time like Final Fantasy, Megaman. Also take a good look at good games that went multiconsole like Madden and other sports games that turned out awful cause of lack of space. Re: Anyone else upset about Xbox 360 having a DVD only drive?
I'm not going to worry about this until E3--perhaps MS will launch a "base" 360 in November for early adopters, and a fleshed out model (HD-DVD drive, 40 GB hard drive, etc.) a week before the PS3 launch. It's a long shot, but who knows? Most people until E3, that's who. lol.
If they stick with DVDs, look at it this way. Developers are used to working within the confines of a DVD, opposed to a BD-ROM or HD-DVD. So, they'll know how to utilize the DVD's capabilities right off the bat, while the PS3 will have the standard progression of first, second, and third generation games while developers get comfortable with both its format AND power.D E S E R V E_V I C T O R YR.I.P. When did Madden turn out awful due to space matters? I don't know of any DVD game that they couldn't fit everything on the disc for. Memory constraints for the system came into play, but not the disc itself.Comment

High Definition Images and Graphics require a buttload of space, Microsoft is bragging about how every game is going to be in HD, they are going to be running out of space and comprimising sooner then later.
Developers were running out of space with the cartridge format for both the Super Nintendo and 64 as a result games like Madden suffered. Same with the Cube stuff had to be taken out because they chose those 2 gig disks.Born and Raised in the 206 [Central District] Sea-Town Funk

Re: Anyone else upset about Xbox 360 having a DVD only drive?
I asked you when DVD games ran out of space, not cartridge's or the Cube discs. You said we're not hardcore gamers if we don't care if the Xbox 360 doesn't use HD DVD. And I don't care. I won't be buying a HD DVD player, as my upscale DVD player for my HDTV looks amazing now. I have a few 720p games, I don't see where they ran out of space. Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is in 720p, has a ton of songs, and ton of levels, yet plays flawlessly in 720p.Comment
