    Question for you guys...

Hey guys, I've never played an MMORPG before... or an RPG (aside from the great Super Mario RPG on SNES... which I played hours upon hours of) and I was kind of interested in getting in to one... I had a few questions and I was hoping you guys could help me out...

One, what's the point of MMORPG? Is there a way to beat the game? Or is it an endless game where it is really like being on AIM talking to friends in Avatar form?

Secondly, what are some cool games out right now that aren't fantasy based like LOTR or WoW?

Third, are there any big MMORPG's coming out on the horizon that might be interesting to a new player?

And finally, where is a good jumping off point for me to get my feet wet in the MMORPG world?

    Re: Question for you guys...

You don't beat an MMO. You just keep playing and playing until you get bored pretty much.

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm?GAMEID=0&bhjs=-1 - Eve Online is a popular Space/Sci-Fi based MMO

Warhammer Online is the most anticipated MMO coming out - but it's a while away, and it's fantasy.

WoW is the best MMO out there - but since you don't want fantasy, I can't really help you out there. Just look around that MMO list and see if anything interests you. Most of them are pretty much dead or just not worth it, though.

There's really only a handful of MMO games worth playing.

What about something like The Matrix online or City of Villians? Are either one of those still running, and are they easy to get into and play from the beginning?

A big part of the draw to MMO's is the social aspect; grouping and interacting with others in order to progress. Many games that do not have a high population can still be fun if you find the right people to play with and are involved. Only a couple of games allow you to solo without it becoming a total bore-fest, but you still need to interact with others whether its interacting directly or indirectly.

If you find the right group of people, either of those games can be entertaining; just dont expect a world where you see hundreds of people doing their thing.

Exactly...after a while soloing gets old. I had a really fun run in WoW, but got kinda busy and fell out of it, haven't played since. I tend to prefer teaming with people I know from elsewhere, though I did end up in a great WoW guild mostly of people I didn't know (I think Injun found that guild first).

It's just a matter of what you want to make of it, and how much time you want to spend.

WOW is still tops. The level of polish and art style are leaps and bounds among other mmo's. I have always though EQ2 is a deeper version of wow, and for quite a while ( with a great guild) it was fantastic. Then i took some time off, came back and the guild had disbanded. 2 weeks after i had started up the game just sucked. Nothing changed other than the people i had progressed with moved on or started new toons on other servers, etc. At that point i just started finding faults with it, and there went my level 48 beserker.

Wow, thankfully, isnt too hard to pick up after a small hiatus. And its easy to find a good guild with people who can help you with your progress, be it pve, or pvp stuff.

I play City of Heroes/Villians and have been playing for over 3 years. This is the only MMO I've played. From what I've read and heard from others this is one of the easiest games to get into. It certainly is not as deep as an Everquest or WoW, but a simplified version of "crafting" has been added to keep it from being mind numbing. City of Heroes/Villians can certainly be played solo, but the greatest enjoyment will definately be had by teaming with others. I totally agree with Bacardi, if you find the right people, the game can be really fun.

              Good luck in your decision.

Guild Wars isn't really an MMO, but it's a great game, and besides that is free to play. 3 Continents worth of content, 2 expansions (one free with Prophecies and one you have to pay for: Eye of the North). You can play with up to 12 other people (though except for a few elte areas, you don't have to use other people if you don't want to) and you can "beat" the PvE side of the game. For replay value, the game has one the best PvP systems out there. It's constantly updated, skills are constantly balanced and it's a lot of fun.
                PS: You guys are great.

What did they do with crafting? That was one of my big complaints (once I played WoW) is that it just all got really repetitive and not much to shoot for other than leveling up (and that turned into a grind after a while).

Basically, after kills loot drops in the form of recipes and/or salvage. Those are used to make enhancements for your powers. Multiple enhancements of the same kind give players bonuses. Besides power enhancements, they also offer costume and temp power recipes. Auction houses have been made, so people can sell the "loot" they have received or crafted. It is nothing particularly deep, but it is something else to sink your time into.

Not sure the last time you were in game, but they do offer base building and badge hunting. (something other than fighting)

Like any MMO though, the "Grind" does exist.
