    Is this true about MMORPGs?

I have HEARD some mixed things about MMORPGs..

First, they are addictive. Regular RPG's are pretty addictive, but I hear these are worse - mainly because everyone tries to "keep up with the Jonses", they always want to have the high level, and the cool weapons, and there's always someone out there who has better stuff, etc.. I also hear that companies add in rare items every now and then to the game to keep people chasing after them..

But.. I have also heard that they are more about chasing after these cool items than actually being fun to play. Apparently they sort of suck you in and.. well I really don't know what to call it since I haven't played one myself, but it just kind of becomes this never ending chase of certain things, albeit items or levels and you just camp spots killing monsters over and over and over until you realize that you'll never have the best of everything and (maybe?) stop playing.

So really, are these games FUN? Or about the never ending chase that empties your wallet and free time? And how about this one.. Are they too addictive? I have HEARD (I can't believe it myself) that someone actually starved while playing one of these games? LOL. And I heard that someone killed themselves when their character died, or something along those lines. Certainly there must be underlying problems there but it's a scary thought. I'm more interested in what some of these OS'ers who have played the games think.

It depends on how much self control you have.

I think they're addictive, but I can resist playing them for a while. I have no life, but I still don't play it all day and all night. I just spend some of my free time playing WoW. If I have stuff to do, or family is having some event, then I can easily do those things instead.

I don't feel like I'm trying to keep up with the best. There are tons of people on there who're way higher than I am. I just like the game. It's one of the deepest games I've ever sniffed. There's just so much to do. I've never experienced that in a game before. Plus, you can do stuff with people you know. Go on quests with them. It's even fun to be nice to people online. By giving them 'presents' and stuff. It totally sounds ghey, saying that it's cool to do something in a simulated world, when we don't think it's interesting doing the same things in the real world, but there's just something to that. Probably that you don't have to worry about real consequences.

But with WoW I think it's mainly building a character, helping mold it into a killing machine, and 'bonding' with other people by going on 'adventures'.

They're pretty addictive. I was consumed for a while. I went to a really small middle school and we only 10 guys in the whole class and we all played Everquest. We got sucked in by one friend. Our lives weren't ruined because we still all socialized and played together but lots of us did play way too much.

Eventually they do not become fun! They become like mini lives where you just work to make money. It's really quite stupid. However, they're still fun if you know how to control them. It also helps if you have a group of friends that play also.
