    Anyone lift weights?

For any weight lifters that can help me out... baseball seasons starting up again for my High School and I've been lifting since September.

I made huge gains last year but I've made very minimal gains this year. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thanks.

    Re: Anyone lift weights?

i lift a lot for basketball and in weight training and i've made some gains this year... not nearly as much as last year... i think my main problem is i never really went up in my weight so i didn't get stronger... my advice would be whatever lift you do, keep increasing your weight gradually or you won't get stronger. (sounds obvious but i've only gone up 15 pounds on my bench max in a whole semester)

If you are playing Baseball. You don't want to get to big. YOu lose your bat speed. If you want a better bat speed work out your wrist and maybe legs too (less cramps). Also once you hit a certain size it is harder to get bigger. It takes more time. I gain 30 pounds of muslce in five months, but now I haven't even gain much at all. I am getting more cuter, but not much more size. Hope that helps

im no expert but ive done a lot of lifting for HS basketball the past couple years. like barret said you just have to keep on gradually increasing or you wont get any results
        Carolina Panthers

        Wake Forest

        ATL Braves

It all started back in '99 when time was hard, North Carolina Central but we called it the yard...

Don't bulk up too quickly. Like someone already said, if you get too big your bat speed will begin to drop.

How much are you lifting? I think you'd make some progress if you start going by intervals in weights, a few weeks before each time increasing the weight.

Don't forget to stretch out your arm ligaments and work on your wrists. IMO those are the two most important parts if you're preparing for a baseball season.

You know what really helped me to increase my benching when I was lifting? Doing that butterfly press thing. The one where you're sitting down and bringing your arms in front of you from your sides. It is a pretty good machine. Also, in baseball, you should go for power and stamina instead of strength. With power, your muscles move faster. More repetition works that out. Also, training your muscles to move faster. I advise you to do some real in depth research about what kind of weight lifting you want to do. Check out the local library. I had a book on weight lifting. I'll see if I can find it and give you the basic number so you can look it up and read it. It's not that much to read and is very insightful for your goals. Remind me.......

Don't forget to change up your routine every 6 to 8 weeks. Your muscles get used to what you're doing and don't get the same effect. Of course protein is good too, gotta stay away from snack and fast foods.

I heard that protein might over work your kidneys and get you in the long run. I use to try it but then stopped. The kidneys have to overwork and you'll have those problems later on in life. Do everything in moderation on the real. I think that if you're really into doing big things with the sport, taking on a different healthy diet would work. Should do some research on that stuff too. These are all a result of my religion of course.......

A semester is 9 weeks right? so 15pds in 9 nine weeks is pretty good IMO, but you really shouldn't max-out its a easy way to hurt yourself, plus you play basketball so there's a good chance you'll lose some of that muscle with the constant running up and down the court, if you aren't already you should be taking in some whey protein.

a semester is more like 18 weeks... and i'm saying it's not as much as last year because i jumped 45 in one semester. i've not hurt myself yet maxing and we do it every once in awhile in weight training... i'm at 215 right now. never tried protein though.
