15" PowerBook G4. The Missouri Journalism School basically requires (well, strongly recommends) that all freshman journalism students have an Apple laptop, so I bought mine at the start of this year. I sure wish the new Intel MacBooks would have came out the same time last year, though.

Yeah, I like the simple, clean, uncluttered look. I've become a huge Mac fan because of OSX, and now with the ability to dual-boot Windows, I don't think I'll ever buy a PC again.

The worst I've ever seen, period. Do you really need to remind yourself where you go/are going to school? What computer you are working on and who it belongs to? What "job" is this wallpaper performing? I ask from a point of genuine curiosity. It is neither unified, unobtrusive, or a stunning image. I know different strokes move the world, but holy **** is that an eyesore.

There's a difference between taking things "seriously" and just giving them thought. I enjoy thinking, inquiring, and introspection, not just turning my brain off to everything and always taking it at face value. There's nothing more boring and lazy than that, in my opinion.

Also, calling something poor or stupid doesn't mean you're evaluating it "seriously", it just means you don't find it worthwhile or witty. Constantly brushing off criticism with the "lighten up" or "it's not serious" mantra is a copout.

There's nothing wrong with analyzing things but you don't need to think that everything has some kind of deeper meaning. And like I said, it seemed like you were taking it a little seriously when I saw your post.

Well, define "deeper meaning" and/or "taking things seriously". I happen to think everything is motivated by something, even if it is subconscious. Why don't I "need" to think this way? It's not hard, and I find it intellectually stimulating. If anything, I find choices and actions worthy or worthwhile, not "serious", which has a negative connotation in this context.

Why someone would choose to display such a desktop with those components presented an interesting question, to me. While I believe, even from an objective standpoint, that the image is unbalanced and ugly, the poster(and his answer reflects this implicitly) likes it because it reflects an affirmation of his self-identity(name, school, fandom, etc). That self-indentity is transposed onto an OBJECT, in this case the computer. It relates to a recent study I read where material possessions affirm personality through signifiers of taste, lifestyle and identity.

Many of us do this. I could, for example, glean from your choice of backgrounds and icons many things about your environment, socio-economic status, etc. People could do the same to me. That's not to say that you can pin someone down exactly, but the process and discourse of WHY someone chooses something is something worthy of inquiry. There's a REASON you chose a Futurama/Boondocks background over, say, a Snoopy or Aqua Teen Hunger Force background. To you and to many, that reason may appear as simple as "I like the show", but there is something that makes you attracted to one show over another, even if you don't realize it.

Regardless, I wasn't asking anyone to engage in a deep intellectual conversation(I know from experience that message boards aren't the best venue for that-perhaps even moreso at this venue, which is male/teenage/sports/videogame centered-a demographic notorious for upholding and validating the concept of the exterior and denying what lies under the surface). I was just asking a simple question, and the simple answer validated why I asked. I just don't understand why some people(and I'm not directing this particularly at anyone or accusing in this particular instance) CONSTANTLY brush off any attempt at engaging discussion with the "it's not serious", "you're taking it too seriously" claim. There's nothing to be afraid of when it comes to examining the "why" of things, and it shouldn't be pigeonholed like that. If it's not interesting to you, ignore it.

You know how little kids often are constantly asking "why" and "but why"? Their developing minds have it right. As we grow older, we are asked to suppress the need to know the motivation behind things. Everything is either elided or compressed into "bite-sized" pieces to make it easier to digest(see: television news). We become passive, rather than active. It's a shame.

Anyway, back to the desktops. What's funny to me is, I KNOW there will be some people that read this(and many more who skip it), who will roll their eyes, or say "It's JUST a desktop". The funny part is, they're subconsciously proving my point.

As for where it came from, I was playing around on Flickr the other day, and came across a bigger version of what I just posted. I cropped it down, resized it, and there it is.
