Where would you work at?
I am going to be living with my brother in Kansas City for the summer, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what kind of job I could get that would be fun for a summer. I have lifeguarded in a small town for the last 3 years, so lifeguarding is always an option. Has anyone worked in any stores like Best Buy or Target? I am really open for anything. I am a business major, so if I could find a job that would help me there that would be good, but it's not necessary. It's hard to get an internship since I am just a freshman in college right now. So if anyone has any suggestions in the Kansas City area or has worked at any place like Best Buy or Target, let me know how you liked it.Tags: None -

Re: Where would you work at?
I worked at a grocery store called Ukrop's (the specific store is a regional chain, I highly doubt there's one in Kansas City). Anyhow, I didn't enjoy it at all, really; the work was sort of mundane (bagging groceries), although it didn't help that I'm not exactly a people person. You don't get paid much either.
Also was disappointed that the experience in bagging groceries isn't gonna result in me being an All-Pro NFL QB. I was kinda expecting that to happen after that one guy Kurt whats-his-face did it...
Seriously though, I'd personally avoid grocery stores. There has to be a better job, but me being a first-year college student, I dunno.Comment

Re: Where would you work at?
The one I work at is the busiest in Oklahoma, so Fridays and Saturdays can get crazy with constant checkout for 2-3 hrs. Then anytime rain or bad weather comes, it will get busy. During the week it is usually not that bad except for Tuesday nights, thats when new movies usually come out. Also now we are having a big time push to sell rewards and other memberships. If we don't meet them then we get written up or worse if happens too much. Everything is on computers, when you can take a break for lunch or dinner, when you can clock in and such, as Blockbuster doesn't want to go over on labor. The application part is the worse of the whole deal. I started during the summer before my senior year and worked till the summer after, then quit to go to college in Stillwater. I came back in the summer to get a summer job, thought it would be easy, but by then they changed the process. After I filled out all the general info. I had to fill out a 40pg. w/ 5-6 questions on each pg. survey to see if I would be a good fit. ex. Does it make you made when convicted criminals are let go? WTH? When the application came back, it was red, which is not good. I couldn't be hired even though I worked there before. I filled it out 3 more times with each coming back red. On the 5th time a manager with the store I knew helped and it finally went through. BTW, I did all the application process while I was still in school. It was a pain but it worked. It is a fun job, get free rentals and such with a discount on some stuff, but the only thing bad is some of the customers can get mad saying they returned the item on time but the computer shows something different and you still have to ask about if they want to buy something else like rewards. Anyways good luck with whatever you choose.Originally posted by tsheltonHow'd you like Blockbuster?Last edited by OSUG1; 02-06-2006, 08:01 PM.Cowboys - Thunder - AthleticsComment

There's actually fun jobs in Kansas City? j/k
Retail is always good for quick cash depending on the kind of environment you're working in. I did retail for a few months and never had a problem.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: Where would you work at?
I've worked in retail at K-Mart for over three years now, which should be similar to Target.
If you don't mind the low wages, it's not a bad job. The work is simple for the most part. Alot of times, it will seem like the managers expect more out of you than is humanly possible, but they know that. They're just trying to get you to work harder to get everything done, instead of taking forever on one project.
You have to be good with the public though. You can't be afraid to approach people to ask if they need help, and you have to be willing to go out of your way to help them without getting an attitude. It can be difficult.
If you're looking into like Retail Management at all as a career, Target would be a good place to start off at. From what I've heard, they offer alot in the way of internships. That said, I wouldn't recommend anyone go into retail management, too much stress and too many hours for too little money.
If you're just looking for a part time job, I think retail is fine. Where I work, alot of the other part timers are around my age, so it makes the job fun alot of the time. It's not too difficult, just have to be able to handle the occasional stress. But if you're looking to make alot of money over the summer, I'd look elsewhere.Co-Commish of the OS Vets I & II

Re: Where would you work at?
I work for a small broadband communications company (VOIP, networking, blah blah blah).
Fun stuff - and tons of privacy so I can whore OS all day when it's slow at work.
