Working out hurting my immune system?

So, when I came to school again this fall, I started working out right away...and for about 3 months I was sick. Like, nothing too bad, just coughin and what not, but everyonce in awhile it would get bad.

I got lazy around Thanksgiving, and proceeded to not work out from then until this past week. Ironically I started feeling really, really good, after the Thanksgiving break (I had the flu for three days during the break). Well, I worked out this week, and what do you know, I wake up on Saturday and don't feel good, and Sunday I am even worse. I feel like crap again today, and I have a test that I couldn't really study for because I didn't feel well.

So is it possible that when I workout I'm more prone to get sick? Maybe its because I'm using more energy than before, but not doing things differently to help the process (e.g., eating better, getting more sleep, etc.).

    What do you guys think?

Edit: And its not that I'm just sore from the workout. My whole body hurts, I have been coughing, headaches, fever, etc.

Re: Working out hurting my immune system?

It probably has something to do w. your dorm or the food you're eating and not your workout. Do you keep your dorm and your possessions clean? One kid in my dorm my soph. year made soup in the same bowl for two straight weeks without washing it once and got sick as hell from it. Anything strange like that that might be going on? Add to that you're at college in general, around other sick ppl, tons of germs, etc. It's scary when I look back at college and realized the flith I was living in. That's prolly why you felt better while home for Thanksgiving.

Drinking will also effect you quite a bit too. If you get a cold and keep on drinking it'll stick with you. Quit booze for a few months if you've been drinking. Also, are you getting enough sleep? This is another big problem w. being in college.

Cause I'm the opposite, I hardly get sick while I'm working out and in shape.

i dunno about this one. i hit the weights 4-5 times a week and i've never had any issues like that. working out is definitely NOT hurting your immune system, you have something else going on.

Do you shower immediately after working out and put clean clothes on? Do you take naps on a couch in a common area after working out or ever for that matter? Do you smoke weed? Do you drink out of common glasses or bottles at parties?

Your immune system is weaker after just working out because the body has exerted itself. Wearing damp clothes thaty you just wore to work out in and then going into a room where there may be some sick college kids or plopping down for a nap on a couch that everyone and their mother has just sat on can expose yourself to germs as your body tries to recover from the workout.

Weed and Booze especially hit your immune system and what makes it woese is passing around the smoke or bottle to people who may be ill.

Hey I went to college, these things seem like common sense now, but in college, doing things that were bad for me was a way of life.

Baseball and Football will never change....EVER....On another not, yes I used to have NY Islanders there, but I really could careless about Hockey, So I took them off my sig, and basketball, well that the my Revolving teams problem. So I thought I would just enjoy the NBA and not just one Team, so I took the NBA team sig out. SO there, lol.

-I don't live in a dorm, I live in apartment.

                  -I don't re-use cups/bowls/plates.

-After working out I usually shower and change my clothes.

-I only nap in my bed.

-But I do party a lot...

Maybe its all just coincidence with the working out thing?

Well partying takes it toll. Probably independent of the working out. Did you stop partying between Thanks giving and Christmas to study for exams, etc?

Booze will definately do the trick, especially if you booze "alot". You're body needs protein and all the other nutrients to grow the muscle and repair itself after a workout. Not just a few hours afters, but for days. Putting alcohol in your system is moving your body in the opposition direction.

I learned that the hard way in college.

But I do party a lot, thats the line that got me. I;m 27 right now, and I did enough of partying for 2 people, I did nothing but party from the age of 17 to 23, I mean party hard. I'm 27 now and I'm falling apart. I'm not sure how old you are dieselboy, but take it slower with the partying, that could very well be it.

I was the same way, my last two years of college after I stopped playing basketball I drank around 100 beers/shots total per week. I destroyed my body for 700 straight days. I went from being nice and tone but still thin to basically a bag of flesh and bones - mainly because of booze. My 22nd birthday I finished all but an inch of an entire handle of JD by myself in 12 hours. I was basically an alcoholic, about as low as you can go - drinking Beam and Coke during my 1pm class on Thurs to get a head start on the weekend.

Luckily I got all of that out of my system and now I rarely drink. No coincidence I've lost 30 pounds and started to see some definition again throughout my body. I had a 31" vertical my senior year in HS, it was 13" last summer when I measured. Now I'm back up around 26" - yet another improvement.

My advice? You're young and you're in college. I wouldn't give up those great times I had my last two years of college for anything. Booze, girls, parties, road trips - crazy, crazy times that you'll remember until the day you die.

You have plenty of time to build a very nice body after you're done w. college. The most important thing is your health though, so lose that cold/cough first, but then I'd stick w. lifting but I wouldn't expect any major results until I graduated and got my diet/partying situation on track. If worse comes to worse I'd see a doctor first, and then I'd lay off the lifting for a lil while.
