In my brief experience of the working life (4 years), the only way to move up in the world is to switch jobs. Most companies don't promote from within from my experience.

That sucks candyman. I guess the old ways of promoting from within is long gone. Hopefully you'll get a better job when your team is restructured in a few months. If that doesn't happen then I suggest you start looking elsewhere.
