    Career Change...

Hey guys, I have been in education, and I am now considering a career change after the recent incident with the whole job process. I have always wanted to go into Law Enforcement, but my fiance' was always against it. Now, with everything going on, it's something that she has given me the go ahead, and is finally behind me.

Now, I'm really contemplating following through with it. Is anyone here in the Law Enforcement field, and if so, would you recommend it? What are your thoughts on it?

    Thanks guys,

    Will

    Re: Career Change...

I wanted to be in law enforcment, and took a college course (intro to law) but also changed my mind.

I know thats no help, but I dont have much to offer. Im working full time at 19 taking a semester off after struggling my entire first year. Law was one of the few classes i did pass though.

I have a friend that is a juvenile probation officer in Newport, KY, and he really likes his job. Might be a path worth looking into if you want to work with kids.

EDIT: Will, if you want to find out more info about that career, PM me and I can give you his contact info.

Well it's extremely complicated. Jpup... my fiance' never would get behind me to go into Law Enforcement, so I took up teaching instead. It's something everyone said that I'd be good at, and that I could get into coaching as well. So even though I wanted to be in Law Enforcement, I took something else. Long story short, I'm not happy. I mean, I do enjoy working with kids, and I enjoy teaching sometimes, but it's just not me.

The longer that I teach, the worse off it gets too. The benefits of being a teacher is great. You get the summers off.. but you have to continue towards your Master's Degree, or at least in KY you do. I am tired of school completely. It's about to the point that I can't even make myself go anymore.

So I'm unhappy, and she's finally realized that I won't be happy unless I'm doing something with Law Enforcement (i.e.-patrol, undercover, etc). So she has said that she wants me to go into it now. That's kind of what prompted this. I've been thinking about it for the past 3 years, and now that I've got the go ahead.. I'm ready to pursue it.

EspecialK... I do appreciate it. But right now, I'm really focusing on the State Police force. Maybe eventually I might be interested in something like that, but I want to get out of the children scene completely.

And burnwood, I appreciate that link too. It's something I'll check out. But I'm pretty sure that even though she gave me the go ahead to check into law enforcement, I doubt she'll want to move out of state right now, lol. But I do appreciate it.

FF, good luck with that. I really wish you the best in that endeavor. It's going to be tough, no doubt in my mind. But at the same time, it'll be worth it.

And MBWfan... why did you change your mind?

Thanks fellas, and keep everything coming.

Will, you have to do what makes you happy man. I think many of us go to our jobs just to collect a paycheck and nothing more. I feel somewhat the same way you do, except I really don't know what I want to do anymore. When I didn't get that promotion last month at work, it really upset me. A few days after that, I decided that I would prove my manager wrong and I have been busting my @ss the last month to show that I did deserve it and it shows.

This morning going back to work, I just felt that unhappy feeling. I'm busting my @ss only to be let down again and that's how I feel.

Back to you bro, my brother works at the jails here in IL (26th & Cali) and he enjoys what he is doing. He is a Deputy Sherrif trying to become a County Sherrif next. You just have to sit your fiancee aside and explain to her that this is what you want to do to be a happy person the rest of your life. I know you said that she's cool with it now, but you need to enjoy what you are doing.

Yeah, and I don't want to just go to my job to collect a paycheck. That's not me. And that's not how I'm going to spend the rest of my life. I am a bit of a cut up, but when it's time to get down to business, I'm all business. And right now, I'm approaching a point in my life where it's time to get down to business.

I talked to my uncle, who is actually one of the agents who protects the Governor, and he has given me a lot of insight on the job and all the opportunities that it can present, if you're willing to work at it. I'm well aware of any and all consequences that may come along with the position, but am more stoked right now than ever. I'm sure when I go through the academy, there will be times that I regret it. But in the end, it will be worth it.

My fiance' and I have talked, and talked, and talked. She is fine with it now, and understands what it means for me to do this.

As for the job promotion that I recently got denied for... their was more to the story, which is prompting me even moreso to get out of this current position. Turns out, that the regional director, forced the location superintendant to hire his Sister-in-law. So everyone who was pulling for me, is now in a big uproar because of it.

Even the superintendant, when I called in to thank him for the opportunity to come in and talk with him, and for considering me for the position, after we got off the phone, he told the fella sitting in his office how they had made a huge mistake in not hiring me. So that made me feel some better about it, but that one "bad" guy at the top, can ruin a whole place. And I want no part of that.

I know there are "bad cops", but there are a whole lot of good as well. Just depends on location. I do appreciate all the comments, suggestions, so if you have anything to add, please do so. It helps me tremendously.

WTF, I would recommend getting into another school system. They are hiring teachers down here everyday. They can't get enough good people to teach. I've actually thought, a million times, that I should have been a teacher. It's seems like it's too late for me.

Good luck man, I say do whatever you really want and what's best for you and your family.

                        Re: Career Change...

Yeah, they are hiring teachers everywhere. And if that was my passion, then I'd be set, seemingly anywhere I went. But it's just not what I want to do. I want to be in law enforcement. It's what I was made to do I believe.

I have filled out my intial application, and have gotten all of my transcripts and all pertinent paperwork in hand, and ready to take to post. This is one of the biggest changes that I have ever made in my life.

But I am excited to do it, and have the feeling that it will be one of the better decisions I've made.

And jpup, brother, it's definately not too late for you to teach. You're right around the same age as me, correct? I'd go for it if I were you. It's a great job, but it's just not my first choice. If I keep in this field, then I think 20 years down the road, I'll regret it, thinking "What if?".

I will always be able to get a job in education. So if I go into the force, and a year or two down the line, figure it's not for me... then no harm. There will be plenty of schools who will be looking for people like me to teach. But I don't think I will be able to handle, knowing I had the chance to do what I love to do...and didn't go after it.

Anyway, anyone else got any input? Anyone a law enforcement official?

I wonder why so many teaching jobs are available in the US. I remember I posted an article here in which Denver schools had to offer teaching jobs to any adult that had a college degree (didn't have to be focused on education). I'm guessing the pay is awful in the US.

The teaching market here is horrible. A lot of grads here can't even get TOC gigs.

If you want to become a cop here, you have to pass the POPAT. Good uncorrected vision is also a requirement.

I've personally spoken to cops and they say the work is pretty rewarding. It does get stressful at times and there's a lot of paper work involved. If you're a thin-skinned person, than it's not for you. The pay and benefits are excellent.

Yeah, that's another thing. The teaching pay is horrific. I know 3 teachers in just the hallway that I work down, who have to moonlight to put their kids through college, and just to pay the bills. That shouldn't be.

I'm pretty thick skinned. Things don't get to me very easily. Paperwork is no problem. I have 3 state troopers in my family. One of those guard the Governor. They each have written me recommendations, and have guaranteed that I will love it. I can't wait. These are all guys that I know, and trust, and have known me for quite some time.

The pay is excellent... as well as the benefits, just as you explained af. I just can't wait. My vision is 20/15 with no corrections ever been done. So I have as near to perfect vision as you can get.

A lot depends on the area you live in. I'm about hour north of Philly, and my wife had to bust her butt to get a full time teaching contract (elementary education). After long term subbing for 3 years her persistance paid off, and she finally has her own classroom. Granted, if she REALLY wanted a full time gig, we could have moved closer the Philly where they are basically handing out teaching jobs. Our school district is one of the highest paying around, so that's why she stuck it out. Like I said, it all depends on the area!

And Will, that's AWESOME that you have an idea of what you want to do and are going for it. There are so many people out there who want to do the same thing, but never act on it. I'm sort of in a similar situation myself... although i'm not sure if I truly dislike what i'm doing, or it's just my current work environment. I wish I had a back up plan like you, because unfortunately the thing i'm truly passionate about would pay peanuts (personal training).

                              Good luck!
