I always fall asleep with the TV on. It's not a security issue, just that it's how I've gotten used to falling asleep and having some ambient white noise in the background helps me nod off.
I'm the same way, I can never sleep in silence. My brain won't stop talking to me and keeping me awake.

Nothing to worry about. It's a night light, if the kids is comfy sleeping with it on it's better than his dad having the kid sleeping in his bed don't you think.

I guess a 14 year old still using a night light is better than a 17 year old who has trouble sleeping.

                I agree 110%.

If this is afraid that the boogeyman will get him if the room is dark, perhaps he should get some help, but short of something on that level it is probably just what he's used to.

Hell, I am 27 and if my wife isn't in bed when I go to sleep I turn the TV on just for the feeling of someone else in the room.

Thanx to all for your responses. I can now tell his dad that it's just different for everyone and not to worry.

Probably not a good idea to be exposed to light while you sleep at night. The reason is that light with short wave length can suppress melatonin production in the body which can increase risk of certain cancers. People who work night shifts seem to be more prone to cancer but more research is needed. You can read about it here www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn3400

Well the kid uses a 2 foot black light tube as his night light, so I wonder if it's different then a regular light. But this thing about people who work the night shift worries me, I work 10p-6a and have been for the last 5 years. Plus both sides of my family have had alot of deaths from cancer, so I guess I'm screwed.

                          Exactly.

When my wife and I had our daughter, we installed night lights all over the house because we never knew when we needed to get up and get the baby or get milk or whatever, and with the night lights, we could get around easily without blinding everyone. It just made sense, safety- and convenience-wise.

However, I hadn't used one since I was about seven, I guess, and it drove me nuts for a week or so. After that, I got used to it, and even though our daughter is old enough to only need one in her room, we still left them around the house.

My wife left one in our bedroom simply because it's comforting for her to know she can go get the kiddo easily if she has a bad dream or something.

It doesn't really bother me anymore, and I'd have to admit, since I'm usually editing late at night, it does keep me from breaking toes on furniture when I eventually head for bed...

My 14 year old son still uses a night light too. I don't think its a big deal, rather something that makes him feel comfortable. I have never made an issue about it or really gave it much thought honestly.
