Enywon hear knowtis knobuddy kan spell enymor?

    Seriously...

I don't get it. It seems like when I was in HS, posting on message boards in the very early years of the internet, there wasn't NEARLY the problem with spelling as there is now.

My fiance is a teacher and she tells me everyday that kids are getting dumber and dumber by the generation. I think you can draw parallels between her assessment of our youth and the fact that it seems like you can't find a thread on this forum without MULTIPLE misspellings.

And I'm not talking about misspelling difficult words. I'm talking about typing "hear" when it should be "here". I'm talking about typing "their" when it should be "there". Stupid stuff like that.

Am I crazy or has anyone else noticed this?

I've noticed this a lot as well. Personally, I think it has to do with the vast amount of technology we have. Parents aren't as likely to sit their child down to read to them or have the kids learn to read themselves.

I remember when I was a kid that i'd always ask my babysitter to read to me and my parents always encouraged me to read rather then sitting in front of the TV all day.

I'd say today's youth is lazy and that videogames, poor diets, and lack of motivation/energy are ruining their futures...

But I'm sure that's what all adults have said for the past 75 years, so what's the point?

Plus, thinking back to my HS days, there were some dumb mother****ers in my school. Plus I think the whole slang/ebonics/IM way of typing really hurts kids. Honestly, some of these kids spend six hours a day on IM typing most words phonetically and in slang, etc. It can't be healthy.

Also, to argue that, some people say, "it's a message board - not a school essay" or whatever and that spelling shouldn't matter, blah blah blah.

I always go back and double check my posts for spelling and I think 95% of the time my posts are pretty clean. If you spell tons of words wrong it definately doesn't reflect well on your intelligence.

Nope, you're not crazy. I have worked in the "word" business for the last 20 years as an editor, reporter and now PR person, and the command of the English language shown by young Americans, both in speech and spelling, is deteriorating at a rapid rate.

There are four reasons, I think:

                        1. Spellcheck. Hey, why learn to spell when you can just hit a button, and it's done for you? I'm a professional in the word business, and I NEVER use spellcheck. EVER. It's evil.

                        2. Laziness. Some kids just don't give a sh*t -- about spelling and a lot of other things.

                        3. Hip-hop culture. How many hip-hop albums have you seen with misspelled words because that's the way it's spelled on the street? Hell, even the group names are littered with misspellings. Dem Franchize Boyz? I rest my case. That's not a racist statement, because hip-hop crosses all ethnic barriers. And it's a force in popular culture, but one of the negative aspects of that force is a reinforcement of poor grammar and spelling.

                        4. Electronic gadgets. Text messaging and instant messaging also are contributing to the decline of spelling. For you regular texters and IMers, how often do you use acronyms such as "U2" instead of spelling out "you, too?" I see it all the time.

                        Take care,

When i'm chatting with someone on a chatroom or on MSN the acronyms I use most often is "IC". I don't think I use many other except "LOL", "ROFL(MAO)" and "WTF".

I'm glad I don't go so far as to type out U2. that's laziness to the extreme.

I write alot of e-mails at my job so I make sure to use proper english when typing. That rubs off here. I may misspell a word or two every now and then but for the most part I go over my post as well as my emails to correct mistakes.

When I'm emailing a chick, one of the things the sort of turns me off is if she uses alot of ebonics or accronyms. I dont know why but it does. Talking to ppl is the same way.
