I'm 25. Had 2 root canals (back molars) about 6 months ago and I need another one. I hadn't gone to the dentist in about 10 years...(i know..I'm a moron) but I'm more scared of the dentist than anyone I know. One root canal procedure was no big deal at all...like no pain. They numb your gums with some gel before they even shoot you with novocane or whatever so even the shot didnt hurt. The second procedure which was like one week after the first was a lot different. Everything was going as planned until 1/2 way through the procedure I started feeling pain RIGHT as he was drilling the remainder of the nerve out of my tooth. GOOOOOD GOD! Worst pain ever. 50% of your tooth is like a toe nail in terms of ability to feel pain. The other 50% is your nerve (the inner tooth). It was like a torture scene in a horror movie..dude drilled my nerve and i felt the pain. It lasted like a nanosecond but felt like an eternity. I yanked my head back and made some horrible noise. He was like, "You can feel that????!" I was like "YEAH!!". He quickly gave me like 3 more shots in my mouth to numb me up.
Having said that...the worst part of the root canal process is the fact that you have to go back to the dentist like 3 or 4 times for one root canal. You need the procedure done, you need to get a mold of your tooth/gum made, you need to get fitted for a crown and you need to get the crown installed. It's a pain. Enjoy. haha.
